Exclusive first look at Hewn Yorkshire’s new luxury countryside cabins redefining the wellness scene

There’s a moment, after turning off the main road and winding down the track into Hewn Yorkshire, where something shifts.
The noise of everyday life seems to fall away behind you. And suddenly, all you can hear is the crunch of gravel underfoot and the sounds of bird song from the trees.
We’d been invited to get an exclusive first look at the newly renovated Foxwood cabins, and from the moment we arrived, it was clear this place was something a little different.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Hewn Yorkshire sits tucked inside a historic North Yorkshire quarry, surrounded by 60 acres of fields, birdsong and the kind of quiet that surprises you. It’s adults-only, deliberately peaceful and designed with a single purpose: to make you stop.
A place like this only works if the people running it care as much as the design suggests – and at Hewn, they absolutely do. The team are warm, friendly and unobtrusive in exactly the right measure. They pre-heated the hot tub, sorted every last detail before we arrived, and on arrival, you’ll receive a welcome newspaper-inspired guide featuring local recommendations. Proper Yorkshire hospitality.
The Foxwood cabins are nestled beneath the trees, and on arrival, we were impressed by the attention to detail.
INSIDE THE NEW FOXBWOOD CABINS
The new-look Foxwood cabins have been completely redesigned from scratch, and the result is stunning. Everything is Scandi-inspired, understated and calm – very much in keeping with the Hewn ethos of letting the landscape do the talking.
Inside you’ll find a gorgeous double bed with a Yorkshire-made mattress (genuinely one of the best sleeps we’ve had in years), a brand-new kitchen, plush armchair seating and a bookcase stocked with books, DVDs and board games. There’s a beautiful daybed nook with reading lights that we immediately claimed as our favourite corner, a full wardrobe and storage, and a walk-in rainfall shower with sleek monochrome fittings that felt far more boutique hotel than woodland cabin.
The lighting deserves a special mention – adjustable for any mood, it transforms the whole feel of the space come evening, when the quarry outside goes quiet, and the whole place takes on this warm, golden glow.
Little thoughtful details include USB sockets next to the bed, hooks by the hot tub to hang your robes, marshmallows and a few bottles of wine already waiting on the side. It’s the kind of place where you can tell every single decision was made in-house, with care.
Dog owners, you’re very well looked after here too. Welcome bowls, outdoor lead hooks and access to The Meadow, a secure open space for countryside adventures. Hewn really has thought of everything.
THE DIGITAL DETOX WE DIDN’T KNOW WE NEEDED
Here’s the thing nobody tells you about Hewn Yorkshire: there’s no Wi-Fi. No phone signal either. And as two people who hadn’t properly switched off in longer than we could remember, we’ll admit that gave us pause.
And we didn’t reach for our phones once. Not once. Between the birdsong, the sunset over the quarry walls and toasting marshmallows over the fire, there wasn’t a gap where scrolling we could squeeze in. Without notifications pulling at you, you can actually relax. Conversations get longer. Sleep gets deeper. Your mind, given actual space to settle.
Hewn also has a no-speaker rule, which felt slightly strict on paper. But while staying, we completely understood. The wind through the trees, birdsong and the crackle of the fire are worth protecting.
THE FINNISH WOOD-FIRED HOT TUB MOMENT
Each Foxwood cabin has its own private Finnish wood-fired hot tub, and is heated and ready for our arrival. Robes on, drinks poured, we climbed in as the sun began to set behind the quarry walls, and that was it for the evening. We weren’t going anywhere.
There’s something about warm water, open sky and the kind of silence that only exists miles from a city that completely dissolves the tension you didn’t even realise you were carrying. Steam rising into cool evening air, limestone walls glowing softly around you, not a single notification in sight. If you’re looking for a reset, this is it.
THE TREETOP SAUNA
If the hot tub is Hewn’s heart, the treetop sauna is its soul.
Set beneath birch trees and elevated up among the canopy, the glass-fronted sauna has views across open fields that stopped us in our tracks. Inside: dry heat, the warm scent of wood and complete, beautiful silence. No music. No chatter. Just the occasional sound of leaves moving in the wind outside. The best part? It’s exclusively yours to hire (pre-booking required on arrival).
It’s the most scenic sauna we’ve ever been in, and we sat there watching the trees sway and catching glimpses of rabbits out on the meadow below, and felt, there’s no other word for it, restored.
The cold waterfall shower that follows is not for the faint-hearted, but the way it leaves you feeling? Like someone pressed reset on your entire nervous system. Highly recommend.
THE FIRE PIT EVENING
After the sauna, we lit the fire pit for a BBQ. There’s a swing grill over it, and we cooked dinner over open flames while the quarry settled into darkness around us. Toasted marshmallows. Poured another drink. Long conversations, no distractions, just quality time. It sounds simple because it is – and that’s entirely the point.
THE VERDICT
We arrived as two slightly tired, slightly overstimulated city-dwellers who hadn’t properly switched off in longer than we could remember. We left the next day feeling recharged and reset.
Hewn Yorkshire is a wellness retreat that strips everything back and reminds you what quiet actually feels like. Let’s go enjoy the simple things in life and nature around you, back to your roots. The new Foxwood cabins are beautiful, considered and special – and if you’ve been waiting for a reason to book, this is it.
Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to go and check availability for our next stay.
THINGS TO DO NEAR HEWN YORKSHIRE
When you do eventually peel yourself away from the cabin (no judgment if it takes a while), here’s where to head:
For breakfast, the team pointed us towards The Little Drummer Boy, Richmond – don’t skip it (those proper Richmond sausages are worth it). The village of Richmond is a lovely wander for an afternoon, and if you want a proper full day out, Raby Castle, Park & Gardens – the Deer Park there is a must.
