Breamish Valley Spa: why this Northumberland spa is made for autumn

  • Advertisement Feature

Breamish Valley Spa is exactly what the darker months are for, with everything you need for a winter escape on one site.

The award-winning cottage estate at the foot of the Cheviots near Powburn pairs a heated pool, outdoor hot tub, sauna and float room with wood-burning stoves, a new golf simulator and The Bosk restaurant.

So, when the clocks go back and the weather turns, you don’t need to go far. Here’s how to spend an autumn or winter weekend there, from a frosty first dip to a Sunday roast.

HLN TOP TIP: Don’t miss out on £40 discount off all cottage accommodation by using the discount code ‘Book40’ until 1st December.

SPA BREAKS IN NORTHUMBERLAND DON’T START BETTER THAN A HOT TUB AT DUSK

You’ll find the estate on the edge of Northumberland National Park and around 15 minutes from Alnwick. Stay in a cottage or B&B room, and you get unlimited use of the spa, pool, gym, tennis court and games room for your whole break.

Autumn and winter are when the cottages really come into their own. Souterpot sleeps six, sits barely 100 metres from the pool and has a farmhouse kitchen and a wood-burning stove, while Night Fold sleeps four, is a minute’s walk from the pool and has its own stove and views to Branton Lake.

Couples should look at the three B&B rooms above The Bosk, Bilberry, Coltsfoot and Cranesbill, with en suites and a breakfast made with meat and eggs from nearby farms. Whichever you pick, drop your bags and get into the outdoor hot tub while the last light slips behind the hills.

WHY A COUNTRYSIDE SPA IN NORTHUMBERLAND BEATS A CITY ONE IN WINTER

City spas shut the weather out. At Breamish Valley Spa, it’s part of the experience. The tiled outdoor spa garden has a hot tub and an ice bath side by side, so you can go from steaming water to an icy plunge with crisp Northumberland air on your skin, then straight back again.

Heated outdoor seats mean you can sit out between dips even on a raw November morning, and there are heated loungers indoors for when you want to thaw out properly with a hot chocolate in hand (ordered through a QR code directly to you).

Inside, the 36-foot pool sits at a steady 30°C, with a hardwood sauna, a steam room under a starry ceiling and a bubbling jacuzzi alongside. Whatever’s happening outside the windows, it’s a very easy place to lose a morning.

FLOAT AWAY THE WINTER BLUES

If the shorter days leave you feeling frazzled, book the Ocean Float Room. It’s a private flotation room where you drift, weightless, in near-total silence, and Breamish Valley says it’s the only private flotation therapy in Northumberland.

Every treatment at Breamish Valley Spa uses Neal’s Yard Remedies, the organic skincare brand known for its ethical, sustainable ingredients. On a cold weekend, a hot stone massage, a body wrap or a nourishing facial feels especially well earned, and there’s reflexology, nails, brows and lashes too.

Pregnancy-safe treatments are available, though the sauna and steam room are off limits during pregnancy, so mention it when you book. If you’ve got a medical condition, check with your GP before trying the ice bath or float room.

Weekend slots fill up quickly once the cold sets in.

A RAINY-AFTERNOON PLAN THAT ACTUALLY WORKS

Northumberland weather doesn’t always play along, which is where Breamish Valley’s newest addition earns its keep. The ProTee VX golf simulator opened this summer, unlocking thousands of realistic courses, practice modes and multiplayer games, all indoors and all bone dry.

Sessions start at £15 for 30 minutes and run up to three hours, and the team suggests allowing around 30 minutes per golfer. Under-16s need an adult with them, and you don’t have to be staying on site to book.

Scan the QR code and food and drinks from The Bosk come straight to the simulator, so nobody abandons a round. A combined spa and golf package is on the way, too.

WARM UP AT THE BOSK ONCE THE NIGHTS DRAW IN

The Bosk is the estate’s restaurant and wine bar, and it’s at its cosiest on a dark evening. Think vaulted ceilings, handmade chandeliers, exposed wood and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the hills.

Evening food runs Wednesday to Saturday plus Sunday lunch, with a must-try steak deal available nightly. The Bosk Steak Deal consists of an 8oz ribeye or sirloin with fries, grilled tomato, field mushroom, your pick of whisky peppercorn, Diane or blue cheese sauce and a drink included.

Sunday Dinner at the Bosk

SUNDAY: ONE LAST SWIM, THEN A PROPER WINTER ROAST

Don’t rush checkout, you can wander back for a final swim, and friends driving up for the day can join you with the 120 Reset, two hours in the pool, gym and spa from £35. Towels and flip-flops are included, and robes are available to hire for £5.

Then it’s Sunday lunch at The Bosk. Expect striploin of beef or slow-roasted lamb shoulder with crispy roasties, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire pudding and proper gravy, plus a homemade nut roast for vegetarians. Sticky toffee pudding makes the drive home in the dark feel a lot shorter.

CAN’T GET AWAY FOR THE WEEKEND? BOOK A WINTER SPA DAY

Non-guests can book a spa day, too. The Morning Spa Experience (9am to 1pm, from £80) includes pastries, fruit, juice and a 45-minute treatment, while the Afternoon Spa Experience (1pm to 5pm, from £95) ends with £25 to spend on delicious food at The Bosk, which is lovely once it’s dark by teatime.

The Full Day Spa Experience (9am to 5pm, from £125) includes breakfast, a 60-minute treatment and the same £25 food allowance, and expectant mums beyond 12 weeks can book the Mum-to-Be Spa Experience from £110. Gift vouchers are available, so it’s worth remembering come Christmas.
