Wild Swimming, hot tubs and Bloody Marys: A wellness retreat at Yorkshire Spa Retreat

When we were invited to check out Yorkshire Spa Retreat, I really didn’t know what to expect.
This newly launched three-night wellness retreat sounds not only very relaxing, but a retreat where all of the thinking is done for you – and that’s exactly what I needed.
Checking in
I went with my mum, on one of the hottest days of the year so far. We set off at lunchtime and it only took an hour and 40 minutes from Newcastle. Our lodge was immaculate. Clean, well-appointed, and quiet, with its own outdoor space and BBQ – the kind of set-up that makes you feel properly looked after before you’ve even unpacked. But what struck me most was the atmosphere on site. There was a real buzz. Strangers becoming a little community right from the start. It set the tone for everything that followed.
The spa
The spa itself is really impressive, and I say that as someone who has visited a fair few. Wild water swimming, hydrotherapy, spaces that feel designed for actual rest rather than Instagram content. Groups and couples drifted around the pool with cocktails in hand. It was vibey without being hectic. Social, but never overwhelming.
Our treatments were good and genuinely relaxing. Exactly what you want when you’ve handed over the itinerary to someone else and simply shown up.
Dinner in The Dome
The bar and restaurant were a highlight I wasn’t expecting to enjoy quite so much. It’s a lovely size – not too big – and on summer evenings it opens out to overlook the spa and outdoor seating, so the whole thing feels connected rather than contained. There was a DJ, which gave the evening an energy that felt celebratory without being a night out. The food was very good – the retreat works to set menus – which sounds limiting on paper but is actually a relief. You don’t need to think too much, you just need to choose. Everything that arrived at the table was fresh, tasty and very generously portioned.
After dinner we went back to the lodge, slipped into the hot tub, and did very little else. Perfect.
Food worth talking about
Across the stay, the food was consistently a highlight. Yes, I’m a foodie constantly thinking about her next meal, but from the in-lodge breakfast of yogurt, fruit, juice, granola and honey to a brunch I can’t stop thinking about, each meal was a win. We’re talking a cheeky Bloody Mary, a full English I still can’t stop thinking about, and a huge slab of sticky toffee pudding that’s big enough to share (if you must).
Movement and mindfulness
The wellness sessions woven throughout the stay – Pilates, yoga and meditation – were a real pleasure, and never once felt like hard work. The small-group format makes everything feel almost like a private class, and the intimacy of it gave us a chance to properly get to know the other guests. This is one of the unexpected pleasures I hadn’t thought about in advance – the community aspect isn’t something you think to look forward to, but you’ll leave with friends. Equally though, if you want to keep yourself to yourself, there’s no pressure to mix.
Exploring the Yorkshire Moors
The guided walk was a lovely addition. The route changes depending on the weather and the group’s ability, which means it never feels prescribed or pressured. Getting off site, breathing proper fresh air and getting some steps in felt like the ideal counterpoint to all the luxurious stillness. Relaxation earned, in the best possible way.
The verdict
What Yorkshire Spa Retreat has created with this new wellness break is a very nice way to switch off and reset. The focus throughout is entirely on you – your rest, your body, your headspace – and that intention is felt at every stage, from the lodge to the spa to the dinner table.
Add in the fact that it’s less than two hours from Newcastle and the cost includes everything you could possibly need to think about – we’ll be doing it again soon.
Yorkshire Spa Retreat’s luxury wellness retreats start from £795 per person for three nights, all meals, treatments and spa access included.
