Meet the inspirational Newcastle founder who taught herself English and built a beauty empire from scratch
Newcastle’s beauty scene has no shortage of glamour, but few stories are as inspiring as that of Salon Sugar founder Panagiota Emma Bitsi.
Six and a half years ago, she arrived in the North East from Greece with no business connections and barely a word of English, determined to build something of her own from scratch.
Today, after just two years, Salon Sugar is one of the city’s most recognisable beauty destinations, known as much for its pink, plush interiors as its loyal community of clients. We sat down with Panagiota to talk about the leap of faith that started it all, the “pink paradise” she’s created in the heart of Newcastle, and why she believes the best is still to come.
STARTING FROM SCRATCH IN A NEW COUNTRY
Leaving Greece to build a business in the UK wasn’t an easy decision, and Panagiota doesn’t shy away from how tough those early days really were.
“Moving to the UK was one of the biggest challenges of my life,” she says. “I left behind my family, friends and everything familiar to start from scratch in a country where I couldn’t speak English at all.”
Learning a new language, adapting to a new culture and building a life from nothing meant even the smallest daily tasks felt like a mountain to climb. But giving up was never an option.
“I’ve always believed in myself and in my ability to work hard, even when I couldn’t speak English and everything felt unfamiliar, I trusted that determination, consistency and a strong work ethic would eventually help me build the future I wanted.”
PROUD MOMENTS AND A GROWING REPUTATION IN NEWCASTLE
In just two and a half years, Salon Sugar has become a trusted name across Newcastle, and Panagiota is understandably proud of how far she’s come.
“What makes me most proud is building a successful business from scratch in a country that wasn’t my own,” she says. “When I started, I didn’t have business connections or perfect English, but I had determination, ambition and a strong work ethic.”
It’s the loyalty of her clients that means the most.
“Seeing clients return month after month, recommending us to their friends and family, and trusting our team means everything to me,” she adds.
INSIDE THE PINK PARADISE
Step inside Salon Sugar and it’s clear this is about far more than beauty treatments. From the moment clients walk through the door, they’re welcomed into what many describe as a “Pink Paradise.”
“I never wanted Salon Sugar to be just a place where clients come in for a treatment and leave,” Panagiota says. “I wanted to create a space where people feel welcomed, comfortable and genuinely cared for.”
Every detail has been considered, right down to the seating.
“Even the seating has been carefully chosen to make appointments as comfortable as possible,” she explains. “We are always happy to provide complimentary sweets and small thoughtful touches that make our clients feel welcome and valued.”
WHAT’S TRENDING AT SALON SUGAR RIGHT NOW
With the beauty industry constantly evolving, Panagiota keeps a close eye on what clients are asking for.
“Clients today are looking for high-quality treatments that deliver elegant, natural-looking results,” she says. “We are seeing a growing demand for BIAB nails, detailed nail art, lash treatments and services that help clients look and feel their best while maintaining a natural appearance.”
Social media plays a huge role too.
“Social media continues to influence trends significantly, so it’s important to stay current and continue investing in education and development,” she adds. “At Salon Sugar, we always listen to our clients and adapt while maintaining exceptional standards and customer service.”
MORE THAN A SALON, A COMMUNITY
Ask any regular and they’ll tell you Salon Sugar feels like family, and that’s exactly the intention.
“I believe people are looking for more than just a beauty treatment. They want to feel welcomed, appreciated and understood,” Panagiota says. “For many clients, their salon appointment is one of the few opportunities they have to relax and focus on themselves.”
It’s a sense of belonging she’s incredibly proud to have built.
“Creating that sense of community is something I am incredibly proud of, and I believe that is one of the reasons why so many clients continue to return and become part of the Salon Sugar family.”
MENTORING THE NEXT GENERATION OF BEAUTY PROFESSIONALS
Beyond running a busy salon, Panagiota is passionate about training up-and-coming talent.
“I love seeing people grow in confidence and develop their skills. I know how difficult it can be when you’re starting out because I have experienced that journey myself,” she says. “Being able to share my knowledge, support others and watch them achieve goals they once thought were impossible is incredibly rewarding.”
Lessons in resilience and leadership
As a female entrepreneur who has built her business from the ground up, Panagiota has plenty of wisdom to share.
“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success comes from resilience, not perfection,” she reflects. “There have been difficult times, setbacks and challenges, but I never stopped moving forward.”
Her approach to leadership is refreshingly simple.
“Leadership means leading by example, working hard, treating people with respect and creating a positive environment where others can thrive,” she says. “People don’t follow what you say — they follow what you do.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR SALON SUGAR
So, what does the future hold? Panagiota has big ambitions for the brand.
“The vision for Salon Sugar is much bigger than where we are today,” she says. “One of my biggest goals is to open a second Salon Sugar location and continue building the brand across the North East. I want Salon Sugar to become known not only for high-quality treatments, but also for its welcoming atmosphere, exceptional customer service and strong sense of community.”
Two and a half years on, Salon Sugar now welcomes hundreds of clients every month, a milestone that still feels surreal.
“Seeing how far we’ve come from those early days reminds me that anything is possible with determination, hard work and consistency,”
Above all, Panagiota hopes her journey inspires other women to take the leap.
“If my journey proves anything, it’s that it doesn’t matter where you start – what matters is how determined you are to succeed. With belief in yourself, resilience and hard work, you can achieve far more than you ever thought possible. The journey so far has been incredible, but I genuinely believe the best is yet to come.”
