Then, now and next: How Newcastle High School for Girls has empowered girls for 150 years

As Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2026, its long and inspiring history offers more than just a proud timeline of achievements. For parents, it’s a reassuring glimpse into the kind of education – and future – their daughter could experience.

Because NHSG has always been about more than academics. Its story is one of courage, ambition and progress, and that same spirit still shapes every girl who walks through its doors today.

A BOLD IDEA THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

When NHSG first opened in 1876 as part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, educating girls beyond basic domestic skills was still considered unnecessary – even controversial. But from day one, the school set out to challenge those expectations.

Instead of limiting ambition, NHSG offered girls the same rich, challenging academic education typically reserved for boys. Pupils were encouraged to think independently, speak confidently and aim high – a radical idea at the time.

And it worked.

From its earliest decades, NHSG girls proved what could happen when young women were given the space to think ambitiously and lead with confidence. That founding ethos – think big, act boldly and make a meaningful mark on the world – was transformative then, and it still defines the school today.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF EDUCATING GIRLS

The impact of that vision was quickly felt far beyond the classroom.

One early Head Girl famously challenged Durham University to grant degrees to women – and went on to become the first woman to receive one in 1895. Another alumna entered the then-unthinkable world of engineering at Cambridge before helping train thousands of women engineers during the First World War.

Others helped establish hospitals, advance women’s healthcare, lead wartime humanitarian efforts and shape cultural and political life.

These trailblazers set the tone for the next 150 years. Their legacy still inspires today’s pupils, showing clearly that girls educated here have always gone on to do extraordinary things.

Celebrating 150 years is no small milestone, but at Newcastle High School for Girls

GROUND-BREAKING WOMEN AT NHSG

Fast forward to today, and NHSG alumnae continue to make their mark on the global stage.

One former pupil, now an emergency doctor, gained international recognition after being the first responder at a major tragic event, praised for her courage and calm under immense pressure.

Another is working in the fast-paced world of Formula 1 engineering, helping push boundaries for women in motorsport. In sport, NHSG athletes have represented Great Britain at elite level – from Alpine skiing to canoeing, where one alumna became a world gold medallist.

Creativity thrives, too. One former pupil has received an Oscar nomination, while another has become a best-selling author whose books have even outsold Harry Potter online.

In business, an alumna now runs her own Michelin-starred restaurant, while another leads global communications for LEGO, helping shape the stories behind one of the world’s most iconic brands.

Together, these women and countless others send a powerful message to today’s families: NHSG isn’t just celebrating historic success. It’s continuing to nurture remarkable young women who shape the world around them.

GIRLS FIRST. THEN. NOW. FOR GOOD.

That strong connection between past and present is what makes NHSG so special today.

After 150 years of putting girls first, the school understands exactly how to help them thrive – whatever their passions or ambitions may be.

The same pioneering spirit that once challenged Victorian norms now fuels modern classrooms equipped for science and technology, while inspiring pupils exploring everything from robotics and engineering to languages, literature, sport, leadership and the arts.

Most importantly, it creates a culture where girls feel confident speaking up, trying new things and leading without hesitation – because every role model they encounter shows them there are no limits to what they can achieve.

As NHSG celebrates this milestone year, the mission remains the same as it was in 1876: to inspire every girl to become the very best version of herself.

And while the school’s history is remarkable, its real impact lies in what comes next – the next generation of girls who will go on to shape the world for the better.
