There’s something wholesome about travelling by bus.
No sat nav barking orders. No parking stress. No hunting for a space or worrying about one-way systems. Just you, a window seat and scenic views of Northumberland.
And right now, getting the bus makes even more sense. Thanks to the Mayor’s Fares, exploring the North East is cheaper, simpler, and far more spontaneous than many people realise. Anyone aged 21 or under can travel for just £1 per single journey or £3 for an unlimited day ticket across the region. Adults can pick up a single ticket for no more than £2.50 or a regional day ticket for £7.50.
Even better, during school holidays, up to three children aged 11 and under travel free when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket.
Suddenly, a last-minute day out feels completely doable.
So, whether you’re craving sea air, historic streets, cosy cafés, or riverside walks, here are nine Northumberland villages and small towns you can reach by bus from Newcastle in under an hour – with stops that put you right where you want to be.
NEWBIGGIN-BY-THE-SEA
Bus: X20 or X21 from Newcastle
Classic, calm and refreshingly unpretentious, Newbiggin is perfect for a refreshing seaside escape. There’s a long promenade, a sandy beach and the iconic offshore sculpture The Couple. Best of all, the bus drops you close to the seafront – no long walks, no parking drama – just straight to the sea. You have to visit Café Needles Eye for some brunch.
ROTHBURY
Bus: X14 from Newcastle
Ok, so this might be slightly over an hour’s journey, but nestled in the Coquet Valley, Rothbury feels like a proper countryside escape. Stone buildings, independent shops, riverside walks and views toward the Simonside Hills will definitely blow those cobwebs away. The bus winds through scenic villages and open landscapes — a far more relaxing journey than navigating winding country roads yourself. Plus, get 25% off entry when you travel to Cragside by bus.
SEATON SLUICE
Bus: 308 or 309 from Newcastle
Small, friendly and full of character, Seaton Sluice feels like a coastal village that time forgot — in the best way. Think fish and chips with harbour views, cliff-top walks and a slower pace. If you take the bus, you’ll be dropped right in the centre of the village and won’t need to worry about parking, which can be tricky when it’s busy. P.S. It’s a perfect spot to watch the sunrise.
MORPETH
Bus: X14, X15, X16 or X18 from Newcastle
Set along the River Wansbeck, Morpeth blends riverside parks, historic streets, markets and independent shops. It’s one of the easiest Northumberland towns to reach by bus, with frequent services and a stop right near the centre – ideal if you want a relaxed wander without any parking fees or a need for a Northumberland parking disc.
CORBRIDGE
Bus: 684 or 685 from Newcastle
Elegant and effortlessly charming, Corbridge is known for its Roman ruins, antique shops, boutiques and excellent cafés. The bus stops close to the main street, so you can step off straight into village life. No worrying about narrow roads or busy car parks – just explore at your own pace. Make sure to check out one of our fave bars – The Pele.
HEXHAM
Bus: 685 from Newcastle
A little larger, but still walkable, Hexham’s character will warm your soul. The Abbey anchors the town, while riverside paths and independent shops fill the day. The bus route is one of the most scenic journeys you can take from Newcastle – proof that the journey itself can be part of the experience.
WYLAM
Bus: 684 from Newcastle
Leafy, laid-back and right on the river, Wylam feels like a deep breath of fresh air – despite being just a short ride from the city. Riverside walks, cosy pubs and a strong sense of community make it ideal for a relaxing afternoon. The bus drops you close enough that everything is an easy stroll. Don’t miss Bradley Gardens – they serve a delicious Sunday roast.
BELSAY
Bus: X74 from Newcastle
Belsay is small but striking, best known for Belsay Hall and its gardens. Did you know you get 20% off your admission ticket if you travel via bus? The village itself is peaceful and green, surrounded by rolling countryside. Arriving by bus keeps things simple and stress-free, especially on busy days when parking near attractions can be tricky.
OTTERBURN
Bus: X74 from Newcastle
For those who love big skies and open space, Otterburn delivers. Set within Northumberland National Park, it’s a gateway to walking routes, dark skies and cosy pubs. Getting the bus means you can truly switch off without the worry of getting lost on unfamiliar roads — and enjoy pub grub by the fire in the William De Percy without worrying about the drive home.
