From Corbridge to Cape Town – Cupper’s Journey is brewing something special in the North East

Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly brewed coffee drifting from a café? Most of us never stop to think where those beans begin their journey – but you will after we introduce you to Cupper’s Journey.
This is a new Northumberland-born coffee brand with a heart in Africa and a mission to bring the world’s finest African coffees to the UK.
Their story starts thousands of miles away, beneath the African sun, where coffee cherries ripen slowly on small, family-run farms – each one producing beans so distinct, they tell their own story in every sip.
FROM CAPE TOWN’S COFFEE CULTURE TO CORBRIDGE’S COMMUNITY
Founders of Cupper’s Journey, husband-and-wife duo Sarah and Colin spent many years in the food industry, both in the UK and South Africa, tracing their passion for coffee to their time living in Cape Town.
“Cape Town is one of the great foodie cities of the world, it’s got this incredible energy around coffee — roasters and baristas who treat brewing like art.”
It was there, in the city’s bustling coffee houses – like Origins and The Espresso Lab – that they discovered not just the taste, but the spirit of African coffee. They watched as experts such as Lovejoy and Nellie from Origins poured their knowledge and pride into every cup. They learned how the difference between an 80-graded and an 88-graded coffee wasn’t just about numbers — it was about the taste.
And that’s when the idea took hold: what if they could bring that same dedication, that same African coffee culture, back home to the North East?
AFRICA IN EVERY CUP
Today, Cupper’s Journey has become a love letter to African coffee. Each bean they source tells the story of a single estate – a small, often family-run farm producing limited batches that consistently score 85 or above on the cupping scale.
“We only work with farms that share our passion for quality and sustainability,” they explain. “These aren’t anonymous, mass-produced coffees – they’re the work of dedicated growers who pour their hearts into every harvest.”
The result? A range of seven stunning African coffees, each bursting with distinctive, aromatic and memorable flavours. Think deep, chocolatey notes from Ethiopia, fruity hints from Rwanda and smooth, citrusy tones from Kenya — all roasted to perfection to highlight their unique profiles.
MORE THAN JUST A GOOD CUPPER
Cupper’s Journey doesn’t just sell coffee; they’re on a mission to educate and inspire. Their ethos is simple: coffee, like cheese or wine, deserves to be understood, appreciated and enjoyed.
They’re strong advocates for the pour-over method, which they say is the best way to experience African coffee’s delicate nuances. “Pour-over brewing enhances the coffee’s natural flavours,” they explain. “It’s slow, mindful and elevates your cup from a caffeine fix to an experience.”
You might be wondering, what exactly is the pour-over method? Well, it’s a hands-on way to brew coffee that gives you full control over the process. Basically, you pour hot water slowly and carefully over coffee grounds sitting in a filter and the brewed coffee drips down into a cup or carafe below. The best part is that you can fine-tune everything – how hot the water is, how fast you pour, even the way you pour – all of which can totally change the flavour and feel of your coffee.
To help you make the most of every brew, they also curate a selection of carefully chosen brewing equipment — the “hardware,” as they call it — because in their eyes, the right kit completes the journey from bean to cup.
UNITING A COFFEE TO OUR COMMUNITY
Beyond selling exceptional coffee, Cupper’s Journey is building a community — or as they like to call it, a tribe of ‘Cuppers’. Whether you’re a home brewer, a hotel owner or a local roaster looking for guest coffees, they offer something special.
For those who roast their own beans, they even supply green beans, giving you the chance to experiment and explore. And coming soon, they’ll be introducing a line of African ceramics — so you can sip your African coffee from a cup that truly reflects its origins.
BRINGING A LITTLE BIT OF AFRICA TO THE UK
At its heart, Cupper’s Journey is about connection — connecting people to places, farmers to drinkers, and Africa to the North East.
“We know we can’t change the world,” they say, “but we can make a difference — one cup at a time.”
As they look ahead, plans are brewing for their very own Cupper’s Coffee House, a place where visitors can watch, learn, and, of course, taste. “We want to create some theatre,” they say, “Coffee is an experience, not just a drink.”
So next time you order your flat white, take a moment to ask: Where did these beans come from? What story are they telling me?
