Harbour baths, live concerts and quirky spots – the best free things to do in Copenhagen
- Advertisement Feature
Copenhagen is known for its chic cafés, designer shops and impressive architecture
But you really don’t need to spend a fortune to fall in love with Copenhagen. In fact, some of the best things to do here are completely free.
In just under two hours from Newcastle Airport, you’ll arrive at the vibrant Danish Capital. The best part? Flights are timed perfectly for a weekend break and are on sale until May 2026 with Norwegian, starting from just £60*
Here’s your perfect budget-friendly itinerary to experience the city’s culture without emptying your wallet.
HLN TOP TIP: Get 10% off parking at Newcastle Airport with the code HLN2025 across this summer.
COPENHAGEN TRAVEL TIP
Before we get started, we recommend getting a Copenhagen Card (from £65.00 for an adult and two children) and enjoying free transport to and from the Copenhagen Airport, entry to over 80 attractions and unlimited public transport in the capital.
WANDER THROUGH PICTURE-PERFECT NYHAVN
You know that postcard view of Copenhagen with the colourful houses along a canal? That’s Nyhavn, and yes – it’s every bit as gorgeous in real life. Once a red-light district, today it’s a bustling harbourside filled with character.
You don’t need to buy a drink at one of the pricey cafés – just stroll, snap some photos and soak in the scene. Make sure to return at different times of day to see the light bounce off the buildings – it’s magical.
GAZE UP AT THE MARBLE CHURCH
Right next to Amalienborg Palace is Frederik’s Church, also known as the Marble Church (even though it’s mostly limestone).
Its huge green dome is quite similar to St Paul’s Cathedral and inside it’s wonderfully peaceful and ornate. No entry fee, no queues, just classic Copenhagen calm.
SWIM IN THE HARBOUR BATHS
Looking for something unique? Try open-air swimming in the heart of Copenhagen at Islands Brygge. Free to use in summer, the harbour baths feature five clean pools, diving towers and grassy areas for sunbathing and picnics. Feeling brave? Join the locals for a refreshing winter dip.
HLN TOP TIP: Want to find your nearest bath or beach? Download the KBH Havn app for all the details.
GET LOST IN FREETOWN CHRISTIANIA STREET ART
Possibly the most unique neighbourhood in Europe, Christiania is a colourful, quirky, politically independent commune filled with street art, music and an anti-establishment vibe.
Think hippie-meets-punk with a touch of rebellion. Walking around is like stepping into another world – and while photography is limited in some areas, the visual experience is unforgettable.
SEE THE CITY FROM CHRISTIANSBORG TOWER
Want one of the best views of Copenhagen? Head to Christiansborg Tower, which offers 360° views across the rooftops — and it won’t cost you a thing. It’s part of the old royal palace and government complex and you can even spot the Øresund Bridge on a clear day.
FIND THE FAMOUS TO LITTLE MERMAID STATUE
Copenhagen’s most famous sculpture is well worth a visit. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s original (and much darker) fairy tale, the Little Mermaid sits just off the harbour and is free to visit. It’s the kind of iconic sight you can’t miss while you’re in the city.
CHILL IN THE BOTANICAL GARDENS
A few minutes’ walk from Nørreport Station, the Botanical Garden is a lush green escape from the city bustle. Free entry with a Copenhagen Card, there are over 13,000 species of plants, peaceful walking paths and even a giant 19th-century Palm House (for a small fee, but garden entry is free). Pack a picnic, find a bench and watch the world go by.
WATCH THE ROYAL CHANGING OF THE GUARDS
At 11:30am, the Royal Guards march through the city from Rosenborg Castle to Amalienborg Palace, where they do the full ceremonial changing at noon. If the Queen’s in residence, they’re even accompanied by a live marching band. It’s a proper slice of pomp and tradition – and totally free. Arrive early to grab a good spot near the palace courtyard.
