Stretch by the sea: beach yoga classes on the North East coast
There’s something about practising yoga by the sea that makes your usual morning stretch feel a little more special.
Luckily, we’re spoilt for choice here in the North East, with sandy beaches, sweeping coastlines and plenty of yoga teachers taking their classes outside when the weather allows.
From free and flowing sessions beneath Tynemouth Priory to sunrise sessions at Cullercoats Bay, these are the beach yoga classes worth knowing about, whatever your experience level.
Shore Yoga
Address: King Edward’s Bay, Tynemouth
Beginner-friendly: Yes
Cost: Free
If you’ve ever fancied doing yoga with Tynemouth Priory as your backdrop, this one’s for you. Shore Yoga runs regular outdoor sessions on the golden sands of King Edward’s Bay, with its Shore Wild classes bringing yoga, meditation and breathwork against the sound of the waves. Sessions typically run for 45 minutes, with an optional sea dip afterwards for anyone brave enough to finish the flow with a plunge in the North Sea. Their next community session takes place on 30th August, book early to avoid disappointment.
Jasmine Yoga & Wellbeing
Address: The Haven, Pier Road, Tynemouth
Beginner-friendly: Yes
Cost: £12.50
Set right beside the sea at Tynemouth Sailing Club, Jasmine Yoga & Wellbeing is about as coastal as a yoga studio gets. Alongside its indoor classes and sea-facing rooftop, the family-run studio takes its practice outdoors during the summer months, including sessions on King Edward’s Bay. Expect everything from Vinyasa flow to sunrise yoga.
Sarah McLusky Yoga
Address: Cullercoats Bay, Cullercoats
Beginner-friendly: Yes
Cost: £7
For something a little more intimate, Sarah McLusky Yoga offers relaxed beach yoga at Cullercoats Bay. The 200-hour accredited Hatha yoga teacher runs seasonal classes combining strengthening and stretching postures with the sights and sounds of the sea. Her beach sessions are designed to be accessible, and there are even special sunrise sessions for those who fancy starting the day with a yoga flow by the water.
Wellness Space
Address: The Hideout Coffee, Seaburn Promenade, Sunderland
Beginner-friendly: Yes
Cost: £14
Sunderland’s Wellness Space brings its classes out of the studio and onto Seaburn Promenade during the warmer months. Its Saturday morning beach yoga sessions take place beside The Hideout Coffee, combining movement, breathwork and relaxation with views out across the North Sea. Sessions take place on the promenade rather than directly on the sand, perfect for anyone who prefers solid ground underfoot, sandy toes optional.
That Yoga Woman
Address: Sauna Hetta, Druridge Bay, Morpeth
Beginner-friendly: Yes
Cost: £30
For a beach yoga experience that feels more like a mini wellness retreat, head north to Druridge Bay with That Yoga Woman. Jules hosts a monthly Beach Yoga, Sauna and Sea Dip experience, beginning with yoga on the beach before moving to a private barrel sauna overlooking the dunes and sea. And, naturally, you can finish with a dip in the North Sea if you’re feeling brave.
