Why Warkworth might be Northumberland’s most underrated weekend destination

Everyone talks about Bamburgh.

And yes, we get it – the dramatic castle, the sweeping beach, the obligatory windswept Instagram shot. Alnmouth? Adorable. Colourful houses, dreamy estuary views, excellent coffee stops.

But if you’re looking for a Northumberland weekend that feels a little quieter, a little slower and somehow more you’ve-got-a-secret-address-book-of-good-places, allow us to make the case for Warkworth. Because this impossibly pretty village is often kept under the radar.

SLOW MORNINGS ARE BASICALLY COMPULSORY

The joy of Warkworth is that nobody seems to be in a rush. You wake slowly here.

Maybe there’s a sea breeze drifting in through the window. Maybe there’s no agenda beyond coffee and a stroll. Maybe for once, you’re not trying to squeeze seven activities into a Saturday.

Start with a wander through the village itself – sandstone cottages, flower-filled corners and one of those high streets that somehow feels frozen in time in the best possible way. The village’s main street leads towards the magnificent Warkworth Castle, which has watched over the River Coquet for centuries and still completely steals the skyline.

Stop in Bertram’s for a relaxing brunch. They do everything from full Northumberland breakfasts to pancake stacks, and if you’re lucky, they might even have Craster kippers in stock.

THE RIVERSIDE WALK YOU’LL TALK ABOUT FOR WEEKS

If there’s one thing to do in Warkworth, it’s walk.

The River Coquet curves around the village, creating some of Northumberland’s most beautiful scenery. Follow the riverside path and you’ll find postcard-worthy views at every turn – castle reflections on the water, wildlife darting through reeds and boats bobbing in the distance.

If you fancy stretching your legs further, the walk between Warkworth and the beach is pure Northumberland magic: dunes, sea air and long sandy stretches that somehow never feel overcrowded.

Better yet? You’re perfectly placed for a scenic wander towards Alnmouth if you’re feeling ambitious, with coastal paths linking the villages. Keep an eye out for European otters and migrating birds on your stroll, as the River Coquet estuary and surrounding coastline are a haven for wildlife – look for curlews, oystercatchers and even the occasional seal basking along the shore.

INDIE SHOPS > TOURIST TAT

Warkworth excels at independent shopping.

Forget rows of identical souvenir shops – this village leans more artisan than novelty. Think galleries, locally made gifts, beautiful homeware and proper browse-worthy spots where “just popping in” somehow turns into 40 minutes.

Chocolate lovers should absolutely make time for artisan chocolatier Cabosse (you’re on holiday, calories don’t count), while the village’s galleries and independent boutiques make mooching feel like an activity in itself.

It’s the sort of place where you accidentally leave with candles, handmade ceramics and vague plans to relocate.

COSY PUB ENERGY? WARKWORTH HAS GOT YOU COVERED

After a refreshing coastal walk, there are few greater pleasures than retreating to a pub with a roaring fire and something excellent on the menu.

And of course, Warkworth delivers.

This village understands cosy. Traditional inns, relaxed dining spots and welcoming corners where muddy boots are entirely acceptable – exactly what you want after an afternoon exploring.

You’ll find places ideal for lingering lunches, slow pints, and best of all, a genuinely dog-friendly welcome pretty much everywhere you go, with four-legged companions happily sprawled by tables in the pubs as if they own the place.

A standout recommendation has to be The Hermitage Inn. Their dessert menu is not to be missed, serving up hearty, wholesome British favourites like treacle sponge with custard and other comforting classics that feel like a proper hug on a plate. They also have a couple of pool tables and dart boards, so games night with friends is definitely a must!.

WHERE TO STAY: THE DUNES

For a staycation that feels special, The Dunes deserves a spot firmly on your radar.

Perched near Warkworth Beach with sea views and beautifully designed interiors, this luxury coastal retreat strikes that perfect balance between stylish and relaxing.

Sleeping six guests (plus one dog), it’s the kind of place made for slow mornings, evening wine on the balcony and sandy post-beach afternoons. It’s also only around a 10-minute stroll into Warkworth village, meaning pubs, indie shops and castle views are all within easy reach.

Honestly, if Warkworth had a personality in property form, this would probably be it.

THE VERDICT?

Bamburgh will always wow. Alnmouth will always charm. But Warkworth? Warkworth whispers. And somehow, that’s exactly the point.

It’s for weekends that don’t need overplanning. For readers craving sea air without the chaos. For people who like their escapes with a side of riverside wandering, cosy pub lunches and castle views they can admire without battling for the best angle.

Northumberland’s best-kept secret? We’re tempted to say yes.
