David Fairlamb Fitness – The award-winning North Shields personal trainer making exercise fun

Thirty years, thousands of transformations and a £5 bootcamp that has never missed a Saturday.
David Fairlamb has spent three decades building one of the North East’s most trusted fitness businesses, and he’s done it by making the whole thing feel less frightening.
Voted Best North East Gym 2026, David Fairlamb Fitness is proof that supportive and serious are not opposites.

Its Saturday morning on Tynemouth beach. The wind is arriving from four directions at once, and a group of people who could very reasonably still be in bed are lacing up on the sand.
They’ve been doing this for more than 20 years. Not one Saturday missed. And in all that time, the price has never moved from £5.
The Tynemouth Beach Bootcamp is the detail that sums up David Fairlamb’s 30-year career. It is not a marketing exercise, it has no joining fee, and nobody there is trying to sell you a 12-month contract. It is simply a group of people, of every age and every ability, who turn up because they like it and because somebody has made it easy to belong.
Why David Fairlamb’s gym has outlasted almost everything around it
Gyms in the North East open and close regularly. David Fairlamb Fitness has been going for over 30 years, and this year it was voted Best North East Gym 2026.
The reason is refreshingly unfashionable. There are no memberships. No contracts, no direct debit that you can’t cancel, no swiping in at 7am to fight someone for the squat rack. Clients choose the level of coaching that suits their goals and their life, and that is the whole model.
It also means every session is trainer led. You’re never handed a card and left to work out what a cable machine is for on your own.
“I’ve never believed fitness should be intimidating. It should be enjoyable, supportive and something that improves every aspect of your life.”
What training at David Fairlamb Fitness actually looks like
Sessions run out of private, appointment only gyms, which is a large part of the appeal for anyone who has ever quietly dreaded a busy gym floor. The variety is the other part.
There’s one-to-one personal training with your own designated trainer, small group personal training, and daily 40-minute strength classes for people who want structure without the commitment of a full PT programme. There are outdoor strength sessions for when the weather behaves, dedicated strength classes for the over 60s, and specialist rehabilitation coaching for anyone training around an injury or coming back from one.
Nutrition and lifestyle support sits alongside all of it, along with body composition assessments, progress reviews, goal setting and accountability coaching. Corporate wellbeing programmes are available too, which is a great staff benefit focused on health and wellbeing.
The award winning 6-week body transformation, and why it is not a quick fix
The six-week Body Transformation programme is the one David is best known for, and there’s also a two-week Body Boost for anyone who wants a shorter reset. Both are built on the same principle that runs through the entire business, which is that the goal is not a number on a scale in six weeks. It’s a person who still trains in six years.
“Success isn’t measured by the number on the scales. Success is helping someone become healthier, happier and more confident.”
From VersaClimber classes to the UK’s first ClimbAhub
David was the first trainer in the North East to launch VersaClimber classes, and they became so popular that they outgrew the gym entirely. The result is ClimbAhub in Jesmond, the UK’s first dedicated stand-alone VersaClimber studio, which he co-founded with broadcaster Steph McGovern after she became a regular at his North Shields classes.
VersaClimbers are low impact, joint friendly, and burn up to three times more calories than traditional cardio, all in a 30-minute class. It’s a very good illustration of a 30-year pattern of David spotting fitness trends before everyone else does. The Jesmond spot has a dedicated community who work out together and grab a coffee in the café afterwards.
The man behind it
Alongside the coaching, David has published more than 2,000 fitness articles and writes regular columns for The Journal and Northern Insight Magazine. He is a familiar voice on local and national television and radio, as well as working as a motivational speaker.
He also led the Great North Fitness Revolution campaign, which was recognised in the House of Commons as a step forward for the health of the nation.
Who trains there
Everyone, is the short answer, and it is not a platitude. Clients range from complete beginners who have never set foot in a gym to athletes, business leaders and television personalities. The programmes are designed for every age and every ability, and the atmosphere is the thing clients mention first.
If you’ve spent years paying for a membership you barely use, or you’ve hit a wall with a routine that no longer motivates you, this is a very different proposition.
“Our mission has remained exactly the same for more than 30 years, helping ordinary people achieve extraordinary things.”
