What’s on at the cinema this month
Summer is officially here and the cinemas are really heating up this July.
From highly anticipated sequels Minions & Monsters to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the long-awaited Christopher Nolan epic The Odyssey, we have yet another jam-packed month of movies to enjoy, whatever you’re in the mood for.
Minions & Monsters
Wednesday 1st July
Fresh off the blockbuster success of 2024’s funniest animated comedy Despicable Me 4, Illumination expands its joyful universe with Minions & Monsters. This new chapter follows the Minions as they conquer 1920s Hollywood, become movie stars, lose everything, unleash monsters onto the world, and then band together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they have just created.
The Invite
Friday 3rd July
Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela’s (Olivia Wilde) marriage is on thin ice. When they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbours Pina (Penelope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton) to a dinner party, the night spirals into unexpected places. Have they reignited the spark, or lit the match that burns it all down? This sharp, stylish, and decidedly unromantic comedy comes from director Olivia Wilde (Booksmart).
Evil Dead Burn
Friday 10th July
Evil Dead Burn may be the franchise’s most savage and terrifying ride to date. After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As they are transformed one by one into Deadites, the gathering becomes a family reunion from hell.
Moana
Friday 10th July
Disney’s latest live-action adaptation brings the beloved animated adventure Moana to life. In ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches the island, the chieftain’s wilful daughter Moana (Catherine Laga’aia) answers the ocean’s call. She sets off beyond the reef with the infamous Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.
The Odyssey
Friday 17th July
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand-new IMAX film technology. The film follows Odysseus (Matt Damon), the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, as he embarks on his long and dangerous voyage home following the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters mythical beings including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the nymph Calypso (Charlize Theron), all while attempting to reunite with his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland). The stacked cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Zendaya. Also available in IMAX and 35mm, The Odyssey promises to be a definitive big-screen experience.
Sia: Nostalgic for the Present
Thursday 23rd July (limited release)
One voice. One unforgettable spectacle. Sia: Nostalgic for the Present is a bold, genre-defying experience that trades pop pageantry for pure artistry, with awe-inspiring vocals, breathtaking choreography, and iconic performances captured cinematically and soundtracked by an unmatched catalogue of hits.
In 2016, Sia toured the world mirroring this film live on stage, frame for frame. Remastered for its tenth anniversary, it stands alone for the first time, not just as a concert film, but as a visual masterpiece unlike anything in music since. It also stars Maddie Ziegler, Kristen Wiig, Paul Dano, and Ben Mendelsohn, and is directed by Sia and Daniel Askill.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Wednesday 29th July
It’s a brand-new day for Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers him, the pressure of watching his old friends move on without him sparks a change in Peter that he may not have the power to control. But when a new threat endangers those closest to him, he teams up with an unexpected ally to protect the city against a powerful villain no one can even see.
500 Miles
Wednesday 15th July at Tyneside Cinema
Bill Nighy stars in this poetic, life-affirming road movie and celebration of the human spirit, following a broken family forced to come together when two young brothers run away from home. While their fighting parents (Clare Dunne and Michael Socha) tear their hair out with worry, runaways Finn (Roman Griffin Davis) and his younger brother Charlie (Dexter Sol Ansell) embark on an epic adventure from Yorkshire, over land and sea, to the wild west coast of Ireland, with the free-spirited busker Cate (Maisie Williams) helping them along the way. Their destination is Dingle in County Kerry, and their estranged, beloved grandfather, played by Nighy, who their parents haven’t spoken to since the fateful events of the previous summer.
