Today marks the start of more affordable £2.50 capped travel across the North East, connecting the coast, cities and countryside.

The Mayor’s Fares are already reshaping bus travel with the £2.50 cap – and from 1 April, it’s coming to the Metro too. Single journeys will be capped at £2.50, with even cheaper tickets also available, and unlimited day travel can be enjoyed for just £5 using Pop Pay As You Go.

It’s a streamlined, region-wide approach designed to make exploring feel effortless, whether you’re commuting, coast-hopping or planning something spontaneous.

A SMARTER, MORE STYLISH WAY TO TRAVEL

This latest move builds on a proven success story. Bus fares remain capped at £2.50 for adults and just £1 for under-21s (frozen until 2027), offering both value and consistency.

And we locals are responding. Bus travel across the region has surged by nearly 9 million journeys this year alone, significantly outperforming national trends.

From Wednesday 1st April, getting around the North East gets even better. The offer expands across the Metro, with under-21s able to travel all day for just £3, while adults can make the most of a £5 Metro day ticket or the £7.50 Tyne and North East Day Saver – covering bus, Metro, ferry and even some local rail. There are also £6 Day Rovers for Durham and Northumberland, making it easier than ever to explore the region. With warmer days on the way, it’s the perfect excuse to get out and rediscover what’s on your doorstep.

TAP, TRAVEL & SAVE

There’s also a shift towards smarter travel. Pop Pay As You Go users will unlock the best value, with savings of up to £2.60 compared to paper tickets and some journeys reduced by as much as 30%. It’s seamless, intuitive and designed for modern life: no queues, no guesswork, just tap and go.

Metro changes mark the biggest overhaul in more than two decades, backed by £1 million of funding. The intention is clear – make public transport not only more affordable, but genuinely appealing.

YOUR NEXT DAY OUT, SORTED

And this is where the lifestyle shift really begins. Because this isn’t just about getting from A to B, it’s about what happens in between.

A last-minute escape to Tynemouth or Whitley Bay suddenly feels like an easy yes, not a planned expense – morning coffee by the sea, a breezy walk along the coast or a date night by the shore. Prefer something slower? Durham offers riverside calm, independent shops and that unmistakable historic charm, all within easy reach.

Or head north, where a £6 Day Rover unlocks Northumberland’s iconic castles, beaches and wide-open landscapes – no car required. It’s the kind of freedom that turns a free afternoon into something memorable.

Even everyday plans feel elevated. A quick trip into Newcastle for dinner, drinks or a browse becomes less about logistics and more about enjoying the moment – knowing your return journey is capped and simple.

A REGION ON THE MOVE

At its core, this is about more than fares. With over 43.5 million journeys expected under The Mayor’s Fares this year (around two in every five trips), it’s a shift in how the North East moves, connects and experiences itself.

Fewer cars, less congestion and more access to work, culture and leisure – that’s the bigger picture. And with fares locked in until 2027, it’s a long-term commitment to making that vision a reality.

Because from today, the North East is ours to explore at a more affordable rate.
