easyJet lands at Newcastle Airport with new base and destinations: what you need to know

easyJet has officially opened a brand-new base at Newcastle Airport, and it feels like a real moment for the region.

Not just another route announcement or seasonal boost, this is a long-term investment and a clear sign that Newcastle is becoming a serious player in UK travel.

It’s the airline’s 11th UK base, and notably its third in just three years, following Birmingham in 2024 and London Southend in 2025. That pace of growth says a lot and now the North East is firmly part of that story.

MORE ROUTES, MORE FLEXIBILITY AND MORE CHOICE

If you love to travel, good news. easyJet is now operating up to 86 flights a week from Newcastle, covering 22 routes (an 85% increase since last summer)

The network has expanded in a way that changes how (and where) we can travel from our region. Alongside reliable favourites like Alicante, Amsterdam and Paris, there’s now a strong mix of city breaks and sun destinations including Lisbon, Prague, Nice and Malta, as well as Antalya, Rhodes, Dalaman and Tenerife for those looking for guaranteed sunshine.

Altogether, the airline has introduced over 800,000 seats for summer 2026 from Newcastle. It’s a significant jump and one that makes booking from your local airport far more realistic, rather than defaulting to Manchester or beyond.

A BOOST THAT GOES BEYOND TRAVEL

While the extra destinations are the headline, the wider impact is just as important.

The new base is expected to support around 1,200 jobs, including 140 direct roles for pilots and cabin crew. And as ever with aviation, the ripple effect stretches much further – into tourism, hospitality and the wider regional economy.

Newcastle Airport already contributes more than £1 billion annually in economic value and supports over 17,000 jobs through its supply chain. This expansion builds on that, bringing more visitors into the region while creating new opportunities locally.

EASYJET HOLIDAYS IS GROWING WITH IT

This launch also ties into the rapid growth of easyJet holidays, which is heading into its biggest summer yet in 2026.

From Newcastle, destinations like Palma de Mallorca, Alicante and Rhodes are already leading the way for package bookings. The appeal is clear, everything bundled into one, from flights to luggage and transfers, making it an easy, streamlined option if you want less admin and more holiday.

PART OF A MUCH BIGGER PICTURE

Newcastle is part of a wider shift in how people are travelling across the UK.

easyJet is continuing to expand its regional network, adding eight new Airbus aircraft across its UK bases this summer, including Newcastle. Since 2023, it has grown by 31% in regional airports and launched more than 200 new routes.

It now offers over 60 million seats to and from the UK each year, reinforcing its position as the country’s largest airline and showing a clear focus on improving connections outside of London.

A TURNING POINT FOR NEWCASTLE AIRPORT

For Newcastle Airport, this feels like a real turning point.

With six million passengers expected in 2026, it’s on track for its busiest year ever. The addition of a dedicated easyJet base not only strengthens its route offering but also shifts perception, positioning it as a go-to departure point rather than a secondary option.

For us, it means more choice and less compromise. For the region, it means more visibility, more visitors and more momentum.
