12 coastal and countryside wellness days out in the North East to beat the winter blues

If winter has you hitting snooze on repeat, we get it. The darker days can feel heavy.

But before you book a pricey retreat somewhere miles away, what if your winter reset is already right here?

This season, wellness days out by the coast and countryside are a must – the kind that don’t require a five-star spa break or a three-hour drive. Just a decent coat, a flask and some escapism within nature.

Because wellness in the North East doesn’t have to cost a fortune, some of the most powerful mood boosters are completely free.

From walking instead of driving to swapping a Saturday scroll for a sea view and meeting friends for a parkrun instead of a pub, it’s all about appreciating the little things in life.

With Go Smarter Go Active, planning it all is easy. There are walking and cycling itineraries, interactive maps, curated day trips and regional cycling events to help you explore more sustainably.

You can plan your journey with the Nexus Journey Planner, hop on the Metro or an X-line Go North East bus (many allow standard bikes) and make a proper day of it.

SOUTH SHIELDS: SEA AIR & SWEET TREATS

There’s something wildly therapeutic about the coast in winter – fewer crowds, dramatic skies and the North Sea breeze that makes you feel so refreshed.

Wrap up warm and wander along South Shields beach, then loop through South Marine Park for a slower, tree-lined stretch. It’s flat, accessible and perfect for clearing your head.

Post-walk reward? A stop at the adorable Bessy’s Sweet Bakes van on the seafront – a proper hidden gem where the brownies are a must try.

Feeling brave? Why not go for a sea dip? Definitely not for the faint-hearted, but most people swear by the mood-lifting magic.

SEABURN TO ROKER: THE CLASSIC COASTAL RESET

The Seaburn to Roker walk is a North East coastal classic for a reason. Long, sweeping sea views and a flat path make it ideal for all abilities. Perfect for getting those steps in.

Try it without headphones. No scrolling. Just the rhythm of your steps and the crash of the waves – it really soothes the soul.

TYNEMOUTH: STRETCH, SAUNA AND SEA VIEWS

Tynemouth Longsands in winter feels cinematic – silver skies, lapping waves and that endless horizon.

Pair your beach walk with a class on the beach with Shore Yoga for coastal-inspired movement and breathwork. And don’t miss the sunrise yoga session, a perfect way to start the day.

How about a sea dip and then warm up at Steam & Salt’s sea-view sauna. Think heat, cold air, repeat. It’s the kind of contrast therapy that shakes off sluggish winter energy fast.

MARSDEN: WILD AND GROUNDING

If your version of wellness is being surrounded by wildlife, head to Marsden.

Marsden Old Hall Quarry Local Nature Reserve offers peaceful woodland trails and wildlife spotting, while the Cleadon Hills White Horse gives you a steady incline and panoramic views that make every step worth it.

For something different, North Lizard Riding School offers beach and countryside rides. There’s something incredibly grounding about spending time around horses – it’s all about presence and mindfulness.

SEAHAM: SUNRISE THERAPY

Seaham is becoming a go-to wellness spot.

Start with a sunrise walk along Blast Beach at Noses Point – dramatic cliffs, sea glass treasures and space to properly breathe. The Durham Heritage Coastal Path hosts a weekly parkrun in Easington/Peterlee, a free and welcoming 5k that makes your miles scenic.

Did you know Seaham hosts Mental Health Swims that bring people together for community sea dips? Check them out.

If you’re in treat-yourself mode, Seaham Hall’s Serenity Spa delivers hydrotherapy pools, serene spaces and full switch-off luxury.

INTO THE FOREST: HAMSTERLEY AND BEYOND

If the sea isn’t calling, head inland.

Hamsterley Forest is perfect for hiking, cycling or woodland walks. The Conscious Self hosts mindfulness experiences here, including moonlit sauna and swim sessions.

Forest bathing has proven stress-reducing benefits – but honestly, sometimes just crunching through leaves is all the therapy you need. Wrap up warm with a cosy scarf and gloves, and enjoy the sounds of nature. Why not do a spot of tree hugging while you’re there, too?

COMMUNITY WELLNESS: WALK TOGETHER

Wellness doesn’t have to be solo.

North Tyneside offers free guided nature walks and wildlife experiences, including badger watching at Gosforth Nature Reserve
and don’t miss the guided walks at Havannah Nature Reserve too. This is the perfect change to meet new people while exploring new places.

In Northumberland, group walks like Hexham Women’s Social Walk combine fresh air with connection. And if you like your wellness with a social buzz by the sea, there’s the Newcastle Coastal Crawl.
