Choosing a Reception class is about so much more than academics. It’s about finding a place where your child feels safe, supported and excited to learn from day one. And Argyle House School should be on top of your list.
At Argyle House School in Sunderland, the Reception class is carefully designed to provide children with an exceptional start to their education, combining attentive care with stimulating experiences that help them thrive.
A SUPPORTIVE START IN A NEW ENVIRONMENT
Reception children at Argyle House are led by their dedicated class teachers who provide consistency, warmth and structure throughout the year. Small class sizes and a close-knit, family feel allow staff to truly get to know your child, helping them settle quickly and build confidence.
Specialist subject teachers are introduced early, with music and French woven into the weekly timetable. Learning a second language at this age not only sparks curiosity but also supports cognitive development in a natural, playful way.
Physical development is equally important. Children take part in sports sessions with Early Years staff in the senior sports hall, as well as weekly swimming lessons, all carefully supported so children feel confident, capable and encouraged at their own pace.
LEARNING THROUGH PERFORMANCE AND PLAY
Drama and performance play a big role in Reception life. Throughout the year, children explore music, movement and storytelling, showcase their talents in a nativity performance and a graduation assembly at the end of the academic year. These moments help children develop confidence, communication skills and a real sense of achievement, a special performance which one to add to the memory bank.
Parents are actively encouraged to be part of the journey, with half-termly themed parent plays offering a wonderful opportunity to step into the classroom and share in your child’s learning experiences.
ENRICHING EXPERIENCES BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
The Reception curriculum at Argyle House extends well beyond the classroom walls. Local visits, such as the Dream Big role-play experience, help children connect learning to the wider world. A variety of visitors also come into school, including dentists, beekeepers, the Walkwise road safety team and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue, giving children hands-on learning experiences that are both memorable and meaningful.
AFTER-SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES
A range of after-school clubs provides opportunities for children to explore new interests, alongside ballet sessions delivered by external specialists.
SMOOTH TRANSITIONS
Strong links with the Nursery ensure a smooth transition into Reception, with regular interaction between classes helping children feel familiar and secure long before they officially move up.
BUILDING STRONG ACADEMIC FOUNDATIONS
Reception is the final stage of the Early Years Foundation Stage, building on the foundations laid in nursery and pre-school. Children continue to develop the Early Learning Goals through a play-based, engaging curriculum. Phonics reinforces early reading and handwriting skills, while numeracy extends number sense and problem-solving abilities. Learning remains hands-on and fun, with practical activities consolidating existing skills, introducing new challenges and encouraging curiosity.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Reception is also a year of enormous personal growth. Through play, exploration and gentle guidance, children develop resilience, independence and self-belief.
STARTING THE JOURNEY EARLIER AT LITTLE CRICKETS NURSERY
