The Royal Grammar School (RGS) Newcastle is giving its Sixth Form students a creative boost with the launch of a brand-new A-Level Photography course in September 2026.

Designed to nurture imagination and personal storytelling, this exciting new course promises to equip students with skills that go far beyond simply taking pictures.

We caught up with Mr Graham Mason, Head of Art at RGS, to find out more about this innovative addition to one of the leading independent schools in Newcastle.

DEVELOPING A PERSONAL VISUAL VOICE

“We are introducing A-Level Photography to foster creative expression and personal storytelling, while preparing students for an evolving visual world. Photography has always been part of our curriculum, but now it’s the dominant language of modern communication – from science and news to commerce and fine art.”

Mr Mason explains.

At RGS Newcastle, it’s not just about mastering technique – it’s about discovering your own creative voice. Students will tackle concept-led projects exploring themes like Representation and Identity or Thinking Ecologies.

“One project, Photographic Fictions, asks students to define and execute their own narrative using the unique properties of photography,” says Mr Mason. “By studying diverse practitioners – from commercial photographers to conceptual artists – students learn to situate their work and articulate a clear artistic position.”

Through one-to-one and small-group tutorials, students receive personalised guidance that transforms technical skill into a distinctive artistic identity. “Our teachers challenge assumptions, refine research and guide creative choices, helping students develop a voice that’s truly their own,” he adds.

CUTTING-EDGE FACILITIES AND TECHNOLOGY

RGS has invested heavily in both analogue and digital tools. Students can explore photography fundamentals in the darkroom and then bring their ideas to life on Microsoft Surface Studio laptops with Adobe Creative Cloud.

Professional cameras, including DSLRs and mirrorless systems and a fully equipped studio with industry-standard lighting, backdrops and grip equipment ensure students gain practical, real-world experience.

“These resources bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice,” says Mr Mason, “vital for both future study and employment.”

If you’re looking to invest in an independent education within the North East, these facilities demonstrate RGS’s commitment to providing the very best in education.

LEARNING FROM EXPERTS AT RGS NEWCASTLE

RGS’s Art Department has long been celebrated for excellence, and this ethos extends to the new photography course. Students engage in teacher-led and peer critiques, learning to articulate intent and respond constructively. Technical workshops are paired with historical and contemporary practice, creating a rich, context-driven learning experience.

“Inter-departmental expertise also enriches the course,” adds Mr Mason. “Colleagues from Drama, Film Studies, English, History, and Performing Arts support research, ethical representation, and documentary practice.”

This collaborative approach is one reason why RGS Newcastle stands out among Newcastle schools as a centre for creative and academic excellence.
