Why more North East brides are saying yes to second-hand wedding dresses from St Oswald’s Hospice
When it comes to finding the dress for your special day, it doesn’t have to mean blowing the budget or compromising on your values.
In Whitley Bay, St Oswald’s Hospice has created something special: Posh Frocks and Bridal Boutique – a dedicated bridal and occasionwear store where every dress has a story, and every sale supports vital local care.
Tucked away on Park View, above St Oswald’s charity bookshop, the boutique offers rails of pre-loved wedding gowns, bridal accessories and occasionwear, with most dresses priced at around £100. From classic lace to sleek modern silhouettes, there’s something for every style, shape and season – with each dress generously donated by a North East bride who wanted to pass on a little of her magic.
Appointments aren’t essential, but they’re recommended if you’d like the full fitting-room experience. And this isn’t just for brides: the boutique also stocks bridesmaid gowns, mother-of-the-bride looks, prom dresses and gowns.
Every penny raised goes directly back into St Oswald’s Hospice, helping provide outstanding, compassionate care for people with progressive, life-limiting conditions here in the North East.
Real Brides, Real Stories
Aimee Dymyd
For Aimee, choosing her wedding dress was about more than just finding the perfect gown, it was also about making a meaningful choice. “I loved the idea of a pre-loved dress and the fact that the proceeds would be going to such an excellent cause,” she explains. “I also appreciated that I could still have my bridal try-on experience, as the shop was so beautifully set out.”
Although she admits she felt a little apprehensive before her appointment, those nerves quickly disappeared. She was able to book a private slot, bring her bridesmaids, and enjoy the boutique all to herself. “The shop team were so lovely, helping with styles and sizes and recommending accessories. I hadn’t actually planned on a veil, but as you can see in the photo, it completed the look perfectly!”
On the big day, Aimee says she couldn’t have felt happier. “Not wanting to sound cheesy, but I really felt a million dollars! The dress and veil were just perfect, and I got so many compliments. It was also satisfying knowing that I had my dream dress and it was all for a good cause too.”
Her advice to other brides is simple: go for it. “DO IT! We live in a society where one-wear items are the norm, and it’s so harmful for the environment. Getting a pre-loved dress can really help with this. The dress was absolutely spotless, a fraction of the price and there was something comforting knowing the dress had already been down the aisle – a bit of good luck!”
“Just a huge thank you to the shop team, who made everything perfect, and to everyone who donated their beautiful dresses. It’s such a great option for so many reasons, and I wouldn’t change a thing about my dress or the day.”

When Amelia unexpectedly needed a new gown after losing weight, she was determined to find something sustainable and affordable. “I wanted to keep costs down and make a sustainable choice,” she explains. “The idea of benefitting a charity also appealed – we’d already booked our reception at a local charity venue, so it seemed like the perfect place to shop for my dress.”
Her experience at Posh Frocks and Bridal Boutique far exceeded her expectations. “It was a much better experience than some of the ‘regular’ shops I’d visited. The lovely ladies squeezed me in between appointments on a busy Saturday and were so supportive. It really felt like bridal shopping with a group of lovely Aunties!”
On her wedding day, Amelia embraced her pre-loved choice with pride. “I felt amazing and wanted everyone to know, ‘It’s second-hand!’ I rarely buy new clothes, so having a pre-loved wedding dress felt authentically me. I paired it with a second-hand veil and my mam’s tiara from her 90s wedding. I got so many compliments.”
For other brides considering going second-hand, Amelia has one clear piece of advice: “If you want lots of choice, a supportive environment and to feel guilt free about sustainability – go second-hand at St Oswald’s Hospice! You only wear your dress for one day, so why not buy second-hand and donate it back afterwards? That’s what I did.”
Alison Henderson
For Alison, affordability was key when it came to her wedding dress search. “I was trying everywhere for a reasonable dress,” she recalls. “A friend told me to try St Oswald’s Hospice’s bridal shop in Whitley Bay. The dress I chose was the second one I tried on and I felt like a million dollars.”
The boutique more than lived up to her expectations. “The service was fantastic – every bit as good as any high-end bridal boutique. Not what I expected at all,” she says.
On the big day, Alison couldn’t have been happier with her choice. “I felt amazing. You’d think the dress had been made just for me – it fit like a dream, and I got so many compliments.”
Her advice to other brides is wholehearted. “I would highly recommend the boutique to any bride-to-be. It can save you thousands of pounds, some of the dresses are even brand new, and you’re supporting St Oswald’s Hospice at the same time.”
