SOUTHBOUND
PROPA!
Sheepfolds Stables, Sunderland, SR5 1BA
One of the best takeaway spots in the whole of the North East, TV chef and Hairy Biker Si King brought PROPA! To Sunderland in 2024, and it’s gone down a storm. Bringing comfort food favourites like pies, mince & dumplings, and cornflake tarts with custard, everything is handmade in Sunderland with ingredients sourced where possible within a 50-mile radius. Enjoy with a pint (and vibes) at Sheepfolds Stables.
Wild Fire
Hanover Place, Sunderland, SR4 6BY
Wild Fire is one of those unique dining destinations that serves laid-back vibes with next-level food, perfect for a chilled date night or catching up with friends. Think industrial-chic interiors, an open kitchen with a roaring pizza oven and a buzzing bar area. The food is incredible, with small plates including the most insane crispy crushed potatoes you’ll ever taste (trust us, order them). But leave room for the fresh pizzas they’re known for. Our advice? Go hungry.
Ember
Sheepfolds Stables, Sunderland, SR5 1BA
Ember’s monthly rotating menu brings flavours from all over the world to Sunderland’s Sheepfold Stables. With sights set on a Michelin Bib, the team – led by award-winning chef, Tamer Hassan – are always creative with dishes, and have some great plant-based options for vegans, too. The setting is almost as impressive as the food, with views across the river. It’s the perfect place for a long, relaxed meal.
Friez & Burgz
124 Fowler Street, South Shields, NE33 1PZ
Known for its mouth-watering smash burgers and fries, Friez and Burgz’ menu includes a range of classic beef and chicken burgers, with homemade sweet and smoky sauce options to complement their loaded fries. This spot is committed to creating high-quality, affordable comfort food. Reviews say that these burgers are some of the best people have ever tasted, so don’t miss out.
NORTHBOUND
Hinnies
10 East Parade, Whitley Bay, NE26 1AP
Owned by Andy Hook, founder of after-winning restaurants Blackfriars and Dobson & Parnell, Hinnies is their coastal offering, with views straight out onto the North Sea.
Expect Geordie-influenced classic dishes made from scratch using local and seasonal produce. Plus, it’s dog-friendly, so you can bring your pooch in the car and enjoy a walk along the promenade to work up an appetite.
Kaycho
62/64 Station Road, Wallsend, NE28 6TB
Kaycho in North Tyneside is the kind of hidden gem you’ll wish you’d discovered sooner. Serving up authentic Indian street food, as soon as you walk into Kaycho, the chilled modern soundtrack, spice aromas, and warm welcome make you feel right at home before you’ve even looked at the menu. The Chef’s Jam experience is a four-course feast designed to take diners on a full flavour journey, making it the perfect intro to street food-style dining or a fun way to try something new…
Longsands Fish Kitchen
22 Front Street, Tynemouth, NE30 4DZ
Longsands Fish Kitchen is a modern, award-winning fish & chip takeaway and restaurant in the heart of Tynemouth. Committed to sourcing sustainable seafood, they ensure full food traceability, working with local food producers. We recommend going for the restaurant option, where you can enjoy dishes like traditional fish and chips, seafood coconut curry, mussels with sourdough and more. Plus, they have good children’s and gluten free menus too.
Burts
Heaton Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE6 5HP
The burger-obsessed little sister to Flint Pizza, Burts is bringing a bold new energy to Heaton, offering burger-lovers an elevated, flavour-packed experience in a laid-back setting. We’ve heard that the lamb smash burger is insane, and they also have a great range of tasty sides, sauces and desserts (beef fat fudge, yes please). A must-visit for those craving inventive comfort food with a cool, neighbourhood vibe.
