- Advertisement Feature
Cool neighbourhoods, seriously good food, stylish places to stay, and some of the best vibes in the country…
If you’re after an effortless, last-minute city break with just the right mix of culture, cocktails and coastal charm, Newcastle is the answer.
This is a city that knows how to live well. An incredible independent foodie scene, chilled coffee spots, some of the best cocktail bars in the UK, cultural gems, great craic… we could go on.
Even better, it’s easy to get to via the A1 or a short train journey, and you get more bang for your buck than most other UK cities.
Whether you’re planning a spontaneous weekend with the girls, a couple’s getaway that delivers on both food and fun, or you just fancy one last summer hurrah with your favourite people – Summer Tyne by NewcastleGateshead is here to bring you the ultimate inspiration for your next city break.
WHERE TO STAY
For iconic city views: Hilton NewcastleGateshead is perched on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne, with panoramic views of Newcastle’s skyline from floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s just a short walk into the city centre, as well as the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and The Glasshouse music venue.
For boutique vibes: INNSiDE by Meliá blends Scandi-cool interiors with riverside views, and their Gino D’Acampo terrace is ideal for afternoon spritzes in the sun.
Right in the heart: Crowne Plaza Newcastle is another great pick, especially if you’re planning to hit the spa between bottomless brunches and art galleries. Plus, it’s just a stone’s throw from the city centre and transport links.
Parking is plentiful in each of these hotels, and they’re all less than a 15-minute walk from the train station.
WHAT TO DO
Culture
Newcastle’s cultural scene is bold, vibrant and accessible, with many free attractions to explore. Head to the Quayside to visit the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art – a converted flour mill filled with immersive exhibitions to explore (plus an impressive rooftop viewing platform).
Curious minds will love the Discovery Museum and Life Science Centre – both museum-meets-playground attractions that little ones will love. Or pop into the majestic Lit & Phil – Newcastle’s beautiful independent library, opened in 1825, which is open to all and free to browse.
Shopping
Shoppers will love Fenwick, the city’s iconic department store on Northumberland Street. From designer fashion to cult beauty brands and an impressive food hall, it’s a must-visit. And when you’re ready to take a break, head to the rooftop for a cocktail at The Botanical Garden by Fentimans, or people-watch at Fuego, serving up tapas and wine in the buzz of the food hall.
Wander down into the Grainger Market and you’ll find one of Newcastle’s most cherished hidden gems – a maze of street food stalls, artisan producers, and quirky independent stores. Or take a detour through High Bridge Street to browse vintage boutiques.
Food and drink
Start your day right at one of Newcastle’s many independent cafés offering exceptional brews. Lagom is a specialty coffee bar with laidback vibes, exceptional coffee and expert baristas. Or Laneway & Co offers a minimalist, modern atmosphere with meticulously crafted espresso.
Soak up the last of the summer sun with al fresco dining at 13th century Blackfriars. Its Cloister Garden is a city centre haven to enjoy great food and a chilled glass of rose. They also have weekly BBQ or hog roast events with live music.
And for the best cocktails in the city (on authority), don’t miss Mother Mercy. Recognised as one of the top 50 cocktail bars in the UK and named in The Times as one of the country’s top 18 cocktail destinations, this intimate table service cocktail bar is hidden in a basement in the heart of Newcastle’s busy Cloth Market.
NEIGHBOURHOOD HOP LIKE A LOCAL
With the Metro, Ubers and walking routes making it super easy to explore different neighbourhoods, take the chance to explore a little further.
Wander to Ouseburn
Crowned the ‘Shoreditch of Newcastle’ by The Guardian, Ouseburn is just a short walk from the city centre. Once an industrial hub, this area is now packed with artist studios, independent galleries and relaxed pubs spilling out onto the streets.
Pet the animals at Ouseburn Farm, check out the National Centre for Children’s Books, Seven Stories, or browse a range of independent shops. Dining doesn’t get much better than Cook House or Kiln, and you’re spoilt for choice with pubs and bars, like the iconic Tyne Bar, The Ship (offering great vegan eats) or new kid on the block – The Lockup, which has a roof terrace and a rotating residency of Newcastle’s best foodie pop-ups.
Uber to Heaton
For a lively buzz, hop in an Uber to Heaton – a cool, up-and-coming neighbourhood, named in The Sunday Times as one of the best places to live in the North. Visit during the day to explore the leafy parks and café culture, or head there in the early evening where you’ll find locals soaking up the summer sun in one of the many bars lining Heaton Road.
It’s home to some of the best eateries in the city, including Hide – a tasting menu restaurant that’s just been recognised in the MICHELIN Guide, Flint Pizza, and Burt’s elevated smash burgers. And if you’re there on a Sunday, don’t miss the most revered roast in the city, served at Nest.
Metro to Tynemouth
If the weather is on your side, the coast is calling. Hop on the Metro and you’ll be in Tynemouth in just 20 minutes. Wander around the ruined priory, browse antiques at the station market, or settle in for a seafood lunch at Riley’s Fish Shack – a local institution nestled right on the beach.
With independent shops, stretches of sand, and a bohemian energy, this little town is a refreshing change of pace that still feels connected to the city buzz.
WHAT’S ON THIS SUMMER
If you time it right, you’ll also be able to catch one of the many summer events lighting up the city. From open-air concerts to family-friendly exhibitions and pop-up experiences, there’s something happening every weekend.
Head to NewcastleGateshead’s website to see what’s on during your stay – and don’t forget to check out late-night museum openings, food festivals and outdoor cinema nights dotted across Newcastle and Gateshead until September.
WHY NEWCASTLE IS THE BEST CITY BREAK IN THE UK
Because it’s effortlessly cool without trying too hard. Because the food is exceptional, the bars are buzzing, the people are warm and the neighbourhoods are made for exploring. And because you don’t need to book months in advance, or spend a fortune, to have a weekend you’ll talk about for the rest of the summer.
