From tracks to trails: Itinerary ideas on the new Northumberland Line
- Advertisement Feature
With the launch of the new Northumberland Line, it’s never been easier to explore some of the North East’s hidden gems.
After opening late last year, trains now run between Ashington and Newcastle, with brand-new stations at Newsham and Seaton Delaval. Whether you’re after a relaxing nature walk, a beach day or a village wander followed by coffee and cake, there’s something to suit every pace and mood.
Trains run up to twice an hour Monday to Saturday and hourly in the evenings and on Sundays. Plus, travel is super affordable, especially for under-21s with a Pop Blue card.
We’ve pulled together some great walk ideas and day-out itineraries just a short stroll from some of the new Northumberland Line stations…

SEATON DELAVAL STATION
Accessible: yes
Dog-friendly: yes (on the lead)
Looking for a relaxing day out? Head to New Hartley Ponds Nature Reserve – perfect for a peaceful walk surrounded by nature. The flat, easy terrain and seasonal ponds make it great for birdwatching and spotting wildlife. It’s also a perfect starting point for a longer circular walk through Holywell Dene, Seaton Delaval Hall, and even down to Seaton Sluice.
Don’t miss the homemade ice cream at the much-loved Crescent Café (often has queues out the door), and finish with a delicious meal or a few cheeky alfresco cocktails at The Fat Butcher Bar & Grill (formerly Secret Garden) – just a short stroll from the Seaton Deleval Station.
NEWSHAM STATION
Accessible: yes (walk to Blyth beach)
Dog-friendly: yes (on the lead)
When you leave the Newsham Station, turn left and follow the road toward Meggie’s Burn Reservoir. It’s a lovely hidden gem of a spot with calm water, lily pads and small jetties perfect for fishing or just relaxing by the water. And just a stone’s throw away is Newsham Pond – ideal for a quiet picnic.
Fancy a longer walk? Head to Blyth Beach, just over 30 minutes away. Make it a beach day, you could even hire a cute beach hut. After, treat yourself to fish and chips at Coastline, grab a coffee at Caffe Ginevra or sip a cocktail at Breeze – great new openings by the sea.
ASHINGTON STATION
Accessible: yes
Dog-friendly: yes
From Ashington Station, head south towards Wansbeck Riverside Park – a beautiful 112-hectare mix of woodland, grassland and riverside. It’s perfect for a relaxing walk, birdwatching or a peaceful picnic.
You might spot a red squirrel, fox, roe deer or even a kingfisher flying by. In summer, look out for wildflowers like foxgloves and orchids. On your way back, stop at Nurtch Coffee House or Bettini’s for an iced coffee, lunch or a slice of cake before heading home.
ALNMOUTH STATION
Although this isn’t on the Northumberland Line, we had to include this station. Enjoy the scenic coastal views before hopping off the train at Alnmouth Station. Take a relaxing stroll along Lovers’ Walk, a beautiful riverside path with views of the Aln estuary. You can link it to the Northumberland Coast Path for a longer circular walk through the pretty village. Don’t miss historical finds like the Ferryman’s Hut and Doctor Joy’s Garden.
While you’re in Alnmouth, pop into the Old School Gallery, wander down to Alnmouth Bay and round off your visit with a chilled pint at The Red Lion pub. A lovely mix of nature, history and summer vibes.
STAY TUNED…
We’ll be back with an update once the final stations open. Blyth Bebside Station is set to open later in 2025, while Bedlington Station and Northumberland Park Station are on track to welcome passengers in early 2026. Exciting times ahead.
