Mascalzone, Sandyford

Mascalzone – Family run Italian restaurant in Sandyford, Newcastle

Mascalzone is a cosy, family run Italian restaurant serving authentic Italian food with a modern twist, including products imported directly from Sardinia and the Isle of Lewis, blending Mediterranean and Outer Hebridean flavours into a distinctive menu. It’s built up a strong local reputation for genuinely excellent, reasonably priced food, with particular praise for its thin based pizzas.

The draw: the fusion of Sardinian and Hebridean ingredients is a genuinely unusual angle for an Italian restaurant, alongside consistently well reviewed pizza and a full takeaway menu for those not dining in.

Hours:

Tuesday and Wednesday 5pm to 10pm

Thursday to Saturday 10am to 10pm (kitchen closed 2pm to 5pm).

Evening dining runs in two sittings, 6pm or 6.30pm and 8pm or 8.30pm.

Vibe check: warm and family run rather than a big chain feel, worth booking ahead given the sitting system for evening meals, and note the deposit required for groups of six or more.
