LOBO’s serving £7 margaritas, 25% off tacos and good vibes to Newcastle

Margaritas, tacos cooked to order and good vibes on tap: that’s LOBO in a nutshell.

With thriving venues in South Gosforth and North Shields Fish Quay, this bar y cocina serves up Mexican food in the North East that’s made for sharing, sipping and staying out a little later than planned.

It’s relaxed, sociable and somewhere you don’t need an excuse to visit. Consider this your invitation to book a table.

IT’S A MENU THAT’S NACHO AVERAGE

At LOBO, there’s no right or wrong way to order. Round up the table and go big on a spread to pass around or claim a plate that’s all yours. Either way, you’re calling the shots.

The sharing plates are where things get seriously good. The pollo carbon is a pibil roasted half chicken with coconut rice, corn crema, habanero onion, lime and a punchy macha verde, served with six corn tortillas so you can build your own.

Fancy seafood? The camarón brings achiote-grilled tiger prawns with citrus butter, corn crema, guajillo oil and macha verde, again with six warm tortillas ready for wrapping and loading. It’s hands-on, a little messy and exactly how it should be.

Sharing’s caring, after all.

DON’T FANCY SHARING? YOU’RE COVERED

Flying solo? The burritos and tortas are anything but an afterthought. The surf and turf burrito is LOBO’s most popular for good reason: it’s fully loaded with extra cheese, extra guac and extra jalapeño sour cream. Extra everything, basically. Next you have the asada steak torta, two-time Mexican Stand Off champion at Wylam Brewery and walked away with the top spot at Wylam’s Battle Royale this summer – the accolades speak for themselves.

Then there’s the newest arrival, the pambazo. Homemade telera bread is dipped in a mild three-chilli salsa, then stuffed with potato, chorizo, jalapeño sour cream, crisp lettuce and crumbled feta. LOBO bake the bread for every torta in-house, and you’ll taste the difference from the first bite.

Your tablemates will be eyeing it up. Don’t hand it over.

MARGS – SHAKEN, SALTED AND YOU’RE SORTED

Drinks aren’t a side note at LOBO, they’re half the fun. Whether it’s a single margarita alongside dinner or a round (or three) for the table, the bar takes its margs seriously. They also have a session margarita on draught, batch-made each week and served from a keg for that ultimate tangy, fresh flavour.

But it’s not just margs that are on the offering, with a new and improved cocktail list, there’s a drink to wash those tacos down for everyone.

The salt rim’s optional. The good times aren’t.

MIÉRCOLES? THAT’S YOUR £15 MID-WEEK FIX

Hump day can really drag, so LOBO’s done something about it. Every Wednesday, you can grab any torta or any burrito plus a pint or soft drink for just £15.

It’s an easy reason to ditch the midweek meal plan and let someone else take care of dinner. Doors open at 4pm and walk-ins are always welcome, so there’s no need to plan ahead.

TACO THURSDAY’S THE NEW FRIDAY

Why wait for the weekend? Every Thursday night, LOBO takes 25% off all taco plates and sharers, DIY plates included, with margaritas at £7 all night long, and it’s fast becoming the one night everyone’s calendar bends around.

Bring the squad, order a bit of everything and let Thursday steal Friday’s thunder for once. It works just as well for an easy after-work catch-up, date night, or a family meal where everyone shares rather than sticks to their own plate.

Whatever the occasion, or none at all, Taco Thursday makes the case for itself. Now that’s something worth taco-ing about…

WHATEVER THE OCCASION, THERE’S A TABLE FOR IT

LOBO’s charm lies in how easily it shifts gear. Early evening, it’s a laid-back spot for a family meal. By the time the margaritas are flowing, it’s buzzing with friends settling in for the long haul. There’s no dress code and no need for a special occasion.

Dogs are welcome too, so bring your four-legged friend along for the ride. The vibe? Relaxed, welcoming and sociable, the kind of place where you’ll feel just as at home on a quiet Tuesday as a lively Saturday.

TWO DENS, ONE PACK AND YOU’RE ALL INVITED

LOBO is Spanish for wolf, a name chosen in memory of the owner’s beloved old husky, and this pack’s got two dens. LOBO Gosforth is the neighbourhood local. It’s a short hop from the Metro with plenty of local life on the doorstep. Open from 4pm, it’s perfect for a post-work wind-down or a weekend catch-up.

LOBO Fish Quay is the one by the water, tucked into the historic Irvin Building. Opens at 9:30am on weekends, pair breakfast with a stroll along the quay and you’ve got yourself a morning done right on the coast.

While booking’s a good shout, there’s always room for walk-ins. And if you fancy staying in? Takeaway collection is available from both too.

Whether it’s tacos for two, a family feast or margs with the gang, your table’s waiting. Book at either LOBO and get ready for a proper feed.
