If you’ve been weighing up a move to independent education for your child, Sunderland’s Argyle House School is opening its doors this October, with two dates in the diary and a warm welcome for families at every stage.
SUNDERLAND’S ONLY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL
Argyle House has sat at the heart of Sunderland for over 140 years, and it’s the city’s only independent school, taking pupils from just six months old right through to GCSEs at 16. Little Crickets Nursery covers the youngest children, Pre-Prep and Prep carry pupils from Reception through to Year 6, and the Senior School takes them from 11 through to 16. It’s one continuous journey through a single site on Thornhill Park, rather than several separate transitions.
Headteacher John Sample, who took up the role in April 2025, arrived with a background that spans Head of Prep at St Francis’ College in Hertfordshire and Headmaster of Cundall Manor in North Yorkshire. He’s built his career around the idea that a school should feel like a genuine community, and that ethos runs right through Argyle House, where staff talk about pupils being part of a family rather than simply names on a register.
That sense of community goes hand in hand with academic ambition. This year’s results were Argyle House’s strongest for several years, with pupils stretched and supported to achieve their very best from the earliest years right through to GCSE.
A CHANCE TO SEE THE SCHOOL IN ACTION
Choosing a school is never just about a prospectus or a set of results. It’s about how a place feels when you walk through it, how pupils speak to one another in the corridors, and whether your child can picture themselves belonging there. OPEN EVENING
Wednesday 7th October from 4.30pm – 6.30pm
This evening session is particularly geared towards families considering Year 7 entry or a place in the Senior School. It’s an opportunity to meet subject specialists, see labs, studios and sports facilities in use, and get a genuine feel for the pastoral care that shapes daily life for older pupils.
For parents navigating the jump from primary to secondary education, it’s a chance to ask the practical questions: how settling-in is supported, what the co-curricular offer looks like, and how academic ambition sits alongside individual attention.
While the evening has a natural focus on Year 7 and Senior School entry, families considering any stage, from Little Crickets Nursery through to Prep, are just as welcome to come along and see the school for themselves.
OPEN MORNING
Friday 16th October from 9.30am – 11.30am
Held during the working week, the Open Morning offers the same access to classrooms, staff and pupils but in a daytime setting, when the school is in full swing.
It’s ideal for families who want to see lessons genuinely in progress, rather than an evening showcase, and get a sense of the rhythm of a typical school day from assembly through to break time.
The Open Morning is open to families at every stage, from Little Crickets Nursery through to Year 11, so there’s no need to wait for a particular entry point to come along. It’s especially worth a visit if you’re considering a Reception 2027 place, as Argyle House still has a small number of spaces remaining for next year’s intake.
WHY THESE VISITS MATTER MORE THAN A LEAGUE TABLE
Both events reflect a school that would rather be judged on what happens day to day than on a set of numbers in a table. Small class sizes, specialist teaching from the primary years, and a strong emphasis on activities beyond the classroom are all easier to understand in person than on paper.
Visiting gives parents a direct read on class sizes, staff-pupil relationships and the tone set around behaviour and expectations, all of which shape a child’s confidence far more than exam statistics alone.
That’s not to say the numbers don’t matter. This year’s results were Argyle House’s strongest for several years, proof that small classes and close attention help pupils achieve their best and unlock real academic potential, not just a good atmosphere.
