Inside Argyle House School: Sunderland’s only independent school with a family-first approach

If you’re a parent in Sunderland, chances are you’ve heard everyone talking about Argyle House School.

Maybe it’s from a friend who swears by its nurturing approach, or perhaps you’ve spotted its charming campus nestled in Thornhill Park. But what makes Argyle House stand out? Why are more parents turning their attention here? And why might September or October be the perfect time to visit?

Let’s start with the big one: Argyle House is the only independent school in Sunderland. That’s a bold fact in itself, but what really matters is how this independence plays out.

With the flexibility to create a truly bespoke education, the school blends academic ambition with a refreshingly down-to-earth approach. The ethos? Family values, kindness, and helping every child to achieve their personal best.

FROM LITTLE CRICKETS TO GCSES

One of the most impressive things about Argyle House is its all-through education. Children can join at the school’s nursery, Little Crickets and continue right through until they’re 16.

The nursery has been seeing exciting developments over the summer, with brand-new facilities designed to create the very best start for little ones. Here, children are introduced to formal learning in a gentle, nurturing way – led by qualified teachers and seamlessly integrated into the wider school family. It means transitions from nursery to reception feel natural and reassuring, both for children and parents.

From there, pupils can move into Prep School (ages 4–11), where the focus is on curiosity, confidence, and building solid academic foundations. Then into Senior School (ages 11–16), where Argyle House students are prepared not just for GCSE success, but for life beyond – with plenty of opportunities to shine in sport, music, drama, and a wide range of extracurricular activities.

A WARM WELCOME FROM A NEW HEAD

This year also marks an exciting new chapter: the arrival of Headmaster Mr John Sample, who joined in the summer term. Parents who’ve already met him say his warmth and passion for education are clear from the very first conversation. With fresh ideas and a strong vision, Mr Sample is determined to honour the school’s family ethos while leading it into its next stage of growth.

If you’re curious to meet him in person, there’s a perfect opportunity coming up: Argyle House is hosting a ‘Meet the Head’ coffee morning on Friday 19th September (9.30–11.30am). It’s an informal event, designed for parents to pop in, chat with Mr Sample over coffee, and enjoy a tour of the school.

STABILITY IN AN UNCERTAIN TIME

It’s no secret that many schools across the UK are facing challenges right now. That’s why it matters that Argyle House is part of Forfar Education, a group that prioritises stability, investment, and a long-term vision. In times when uncertainty can weigh heavily on parents’ choices, Argyle House offers reassurance that their children’s education is in safe hands.

Excitingly, the school is also working to expand its bus routes across Sunderland, making it even easier for families across the region to access what it has to offer.

MORE THAN JUST ACADEMICS

Of course, exam results are important but ask any Argyle House parent and they’ll tell you the school’s real magic lies in how it shapes children as individuals. Pupils here are encouraged to be confident, curious, and kind. The school nurtures independence and resilience, while also fostering a real sense of community.

And with a vibrant programme of extracurricular opportunities—from sports teams to drama productions and music—children are given the space to discover passions outside the classroom too. Trips, activities, and enrichment are all part of the picture, helping pupils grow into well-rounded young people who are ready for whatever comes next.
