Fashion Britain Council’s taking over Newcastle: the events you can’t miss

Following Somebody Else’s Guy and High Life North’s sustainable-first catwalk in Newcastle, fashion’s clearly having a moment in the Toon – and there’s more to come.

Fashion Britain, the British Fashion Council’s new nationwide programme, launches in Newcastle this month as part of a UK-wide celebration of over 1,000 fashion and culture events.

The city joins six others in the programme, with the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Eldon Square, Fenwick and Newcastle College all playing host.

The North East’s inclusion isn’t a token stop on the national tour. The programme is built around celebrating the region’s rich creative heritage, with the BFC pairing a Newcastle-born designer alongside one of the region’s best-known heritage brands to lead the conversation.

Fashion designer Genevieve Devine grew up in Newcastle, started her career at Northumbria, and has spoken about her deep affection and creative connection to the area, calling it long-overdue recognition of the wealth of talent and diversity of thought that doesn’t always get a voice in British fashion. Ian Bergin traces Barbour’s own story back to South Shields Marketplace, tying the brand’s craftsmanship and community values directly to the region rather than treating the North East as an afterthought to London.

WHY THE REGION’S BEING SINGLED OUT

Fashion Britain sits under the BFC’s Strategy 2030, a push toward access, creativity and growth that’s meant to move fashion coverage beyond London for good. BFC chief executive Laura Weir said the aim is about creating stronger pathways for creativity, opportunity and growth in every part of the country, working with over 100 designer members alongside cultural institutions in each host city.

Newcastle City Council chief executive Pam Smith welcomed the city’s part in it, saying Newcastle is ready to turn the city into a catwalk during a fashion-focussed week. Baltic’s Graham Easterlow added that hosting the BFC supports its commitment to bringing creative opportunities out of London and into the regions, calling the venue an ideal setting to connect contemporary art and fashion.

Barbour’s Ian Bergin, whose brand traces its roots to South Shields Marketplace, said the recognition is meaningful given how much the region has shaped the company’s identity. It’s part of why Fashion Britain frames itself as a long-term project too, aiming to build lasting career pathways for designers outside the capital rather than a one-off September takeover.
