Walworth Castle is the County Durham wedding venue that feels like a fairytale

Walworth Castle doesn’t hand you one version of a wedding day and expect you to fit into it.
This castle with 12th-century origins near Darlington has existed for over 800 years, and it now gives couples four distinct ceremony spaces, four ways to structure the celebration, and a reception room with a 16th-century entrance still built into the walls.
It’s one of the more distinctive wedding venues County Durham has to offer, precisely because it doesn’t ask you to compromise on where or how you say ‘I do’. With just one wedding held per day, the venue is entirely yours to shape.
Whether that’s a candlelit dungeon, a woodland carpeted in wild garlic or golden leaves, or an elegant ballroom, Walworth Castle adapts to your day rather than the other way round.
FOUR CEREMONIES, ONE CASTLE
The Ballroom is the traditional pick: natural light, ornate coving and enough space for a larger guest list, with a straightforward walk out to the lawns once you’re married. It’s the choice for couples who want a classic castle wedding without any surprises.
Lady Palmer’s Pavilion takes the ceremony outside, with the castle itself as the backdrop – a setup that does a lot of the work for your photographs before the reception’s even started. Walworth’s Woodland ceremony space sits beneath mature trees within the grounds, and couples marrying in spring get a bonus: the woodland floor fills with wild garlic and small white flowers.
Then there’s the Dungeon, which holds up to 40 guests among the original stone walls. It’s intimate, it’s lit by candlelight, and it’s not a space every couple will choose – but for those who do, it’s the ceremony their guests will still be talking about years later.
THEN THE RECEPTION MOVES UNDER A GLASS CEILING WITH BREATHTAKING CASTLE VIEWS
After the vows, celebrations move to Cardinal’s Court, where the castle’s history stays firmly part of the day. Look up and you’ll see the original 16th-century entrance built into the room, framed by three pairs of classical columns in the Roman Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders, alongside a 16th-century stained-glass window. Cardinal’s Court has its own private bar, so guests don’t need to leave the room to keep drinks topped up.
There’s somewhere to retreat to as well: a renovated bar and lounge near the castle’s entrance for quieter conversation, a garden terrace with its own outdoor bar, lighting and heaters for evenings that run past sunset, and a woodland firepit for when things wind down later on.
FOUR WAYS TO STRUCTURE THE DAY
Exclusively Yours gives you sole use of the castle, its grounds and its accommodation, so there are no other guests anywhere on site – just you and the people you’ve invited. The Inclusive Package brings the core elements of the day together in one plan, built for couples who want the details handled without losing the ability to personalise things.
Twilight Weddings shift the focus to the evening: a relaxed, atmospheric celebration built around food, company and time on the dance floor rather than a full day of formalities. Nearest & Dearest is designed for smaller weddings, keeping the romance and the history of the castle but scaled down for a more intimate guest list.
SLEEP IN THE TOWER
Walworth Castle has 32 bedrooms in total, and the newest addition is Room 29, the King James I Suite: a standalone bath, a couples’ shower, a separate living area and a bedroom built into one of the castle’s towers. It adjoins its own bridal dressing room, giving the wedding party somewhere to get ready that isn’t a single crowded hotel room once dresses, hair, make-up and photographers are all factored in.
Other rooms are being individually styled as part of an ongoing refurbishment, including Room 16, done out in a gothic style that pairs naturally with the Dungeon for couples who’ve chosen that ceremony. Close family or friends can book rooms elsewhere in the castle, so the wedding party isn’t scattered across separate hotels once the night’s over.

County Durham has no shortage of country houses and barns doing weddings well, but Walworth Castle’s position is straightforward: it’s an actual castle, not a building styled to resemble one, and it hosts only one wedding a day, so the focus never has to compete with another wedding down the corridor.
It sits just outside Darlington, close enough for guests travelling from Newcastle, Sunderland or further into North Yorkshire, with the countryside on the doorstep for photographs and 16th-century stonework as the backdrop for the reception itself.
