Annie is the hard-knock West End hit musical coming to Newcastle this August

This August, Newcastle doesn’t need a cinema screen – its own leading lady is taking the stage, red dress and all.
The smash-hit West End production of Annie touches down at Newcastle Theatre Royal from Tuesday 4th – Saturday 8th August, and if you only book one family musical this summer, bet your bottom dollar it should be this one.
THE SUN’LL COME OUT: WHAT’S THE SHOW ABOUT?
Set against the grit and glamour of 1930s New York, Annie follows a plucky young orphan escaping the clutches of the fearsome Miss Hannigan for a shot at a fairytale Christmas with billionaire Oliver Warbucks. It’s a rags-to-riches story with more heart than a Spielberg finale and more toe-tapping numbers than a Sondheim marathon. Think Little Miss Sunshine energy wrapped in showtunes – optimism as a survival strategy, delivered with jazz hands.
MISS HANNIGAN: CRUELLA DE VIL MEETS MOMMIE DEAREST
Every great underdog story needs a villain worth booing, and this one’s a stage and screen powerhouse. Former Brookside and Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney steps into Miss Hannigan’s gin-soaked cardigan, serving equal parts pantomime menace and comic timing. If Cruella de Vil ran an orphanage instead of a fashion house, she’d be taking notes from this performance. It’s camp, it’s chaotic, and it’s exactly the kind of scene-stealing turn that makes musical theatre villains so deliciously watchable.
EASY STREET TO THE BOX OFFICE: WHY BOOK EARLY
With reviews from the national press singing its praises and a running time of two hours twenty minutes (interval included), this production has become something of a victory lap for the classic musical. Newcastle audiences have a habit of selling out these limited runs fast, so if “Easy Street” is where you’d rather be than stuck in a queue, early booking is the move.
Matinee performances run Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, giving families plenty of ways to fit a trip to Warbucks Mansion (sorry, the Main Stage) around school-holiday plans.

There’s also an Audio Described and Captioned performance with a pre-show Touch Tour on Saturday 8 August at 2.30pm, ensuring the magic of Annie’s world is as accessible as it is unforgettable.
FROM HARD-KNOCK LIFE TO HAPPY ENDING: THE SONGS YOU’LL KNOW
Whether or not you’ve seen Annie before, chances are you already know the soundtrack. It’s the Hard-Knock Life, Easy Street, I Don’t Need Anything But You and, of course, Tomorrow have long since escaped the theatre and embedded themselves in pop culture – sampled, covered, and hummed by people who’ve never set foot in a stalls seat. Hearing them live, with a full company and orchestra, is the difference between watching a trailer and finally seeing the whole film.
