If you’re looking to swap the gym for something more exhilarating, these outdoor fitness experiences across the North East deliver exactly that.
MUD, SWEAT AND NORTH SEA AIR
If your idea of motivation involves mud under your nails and salt in your hair, obstacle races and coastal challenges are where things get interesting.
Trail Blazer: Coastal Edition, Morpeth
Sunday 28th June 2026
A standout coastal challenge is Trail Blazer: Coastal Edition by Heart & Soul Racing, taking place in Widdrington near Morpeth along the Northumberland Coastal Path. The route covers just over 10km of mixed terrain – from gravel tracks to sandy dunes – with no cut-off times, making it accessible whether you run, jog or walk. With live music and food at the finish, it’s a more relaxed, social take on outdoor fitness by the sea.
Tough Mudder, Yorkshire
Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th July 2026
If you’re willing to travel a little further, Tough Mudder Yorkshire offers one of the UK’s most iconic obstacle course challenges. Held at Broughton Hall Estate near Skipton, it features 5km and 15km routes packed with more than 20 obstacles, from icy water dips to demanding climbs through woodland and hills. It’s all about teamwork, resilience and embracing the mud rather than racing the clock. Best of all, every entry supports charity fundraising, adding purpose to the adrenaline-fuelled experience.
Pretty Muddy, North East
Variuos dates
For something a little more light-hearted, Pretty Muddy by Cancer Research UK brings a fun, inclusive twist to obstacle racing. These 5k courses focus less on competition and more on camaraderie, with plenty of mud, inflatables and laughter along the way. In the North East, you’ll find events at Herrington Country Park in Sunderland and the Town Moor in Newcastle, both returning in early summer. With options for adults and kids, it’s an accessible way to get involved in the region’s muddy fitness scene – no matter your experience level – while supporting a meaningful cause.
Muddy Roads, Teesside

Further south in Teesside, Muddy Roads offers a more grassroots but equally rewarding take on muddy fitness. Established in 2013, the organisation runs off-road trail races designed for all abilities, from complete beginners to seasoned runners. Their events – including 5km woodland routes and seasonal series races – focus on scenic terrain, community spirit and just enough mud to keep things interesting.
BOOTCAMPS WITH A WILD EDGE
If you prefer structured training with a side of scenery, the region’s bootcamp scene offers far more than burpees in a park.
Northern Bootcamp, Northumberland

Their sessions are rooted in military-style training but scaled for all abilities, creating a supportive, high-energy environment whether you’re a beginner or more experienced. Even better, you can try it out with a free first week, making it an easy way to test the waters before committing.
David Fairlamb Fitness – Beach Bootcamp, Tynemouth

TRAIL RUNNING THAT TESTS YOUR LIMITS
If you’re looking for something more endurance-focused, the North East’s trail running scene is quietly one of the UK’s best.
Endure Events, North East
Take the Endure Events series, which hosts brutally rewarding races like the Devil Half Marathon in the Derwent Valley. With over 1,600ft of elevation and unforgiving terrain, it’s the kind of challenge that demands mental resilience as much as physical strength.
Wild Deer Events, North East
Wild Deer Events hosts a wide range of trail runs across the North East and beyond, with events taking place in locations such as Gibside, Derwent Reservoir and Alnwick. Distances vary from accessible 5K and 10K routes through to longer endurance challenges, making them suitable for all experience levels. Set in scenic countryside and woodland, the runs offer the chance to enjoy natural terrain and spot local wildlife along the way.
North East Trail Runners
The North East Trail Runners Facebook group is a busy online community where runners share upcoming races, meetups, routes and event updates across the region. Whether you’re a beginner or deep into race season, it’s the easiest way to tap into real-time recommendations and find others heading out on the same trails.
ADVENTURE FITNESS: BEYOND THE RUN
For something completely different, adventure fitness experiences across the region are redefining what a “workout” looks like.
Endless Adventure, North East

Each session blends real stamina, teamwork and a serious adrenaline hit, making it one of the most exciting ways to stay active in the region.
Heart and Soul Fest, Northumberland
