First look at Freight Island: Newcastle’s newest rooftop destination
Get ready, Newcastle – the city’s skyline is about to come alive. Freight Island, the UK’s largest rooftop hospitality concept, is officially opening this June atop the former Debenhams in Eldon Square.
Spanning 60,000 sq ft, the venue promises a sensory feast of food, drinks, music and culture – a social hotspot unlike anything the country has seen. First-look CGI visuals give us a glimpse of what’s to come, and we’re so excited for it.
THE PLANT ROOM
At the heart of Freight Island is The Plant Room, a jaw-dropping space beneath the UK’s largest retractable roof in a hospitality venue. By day, it’s a bright, open-air paradise perfect for dining and drinks; by night, it transforms into an immersive late-night playground, catering for everything from family lunches and after-work cocktails to live performances and large-scale events.
FOR THE FOODIES
Foodies, prepare to be spoilt. Freight Island’s 12 kitchens bring together local favourites like I Scream for Pizza, Miso, Meat:Stack, and FAB Bakery with regional talent including FUKU, V.Goode Pies, Pita, and Jerk Junction. A four-bar drinks programme champions sustainable wine, local breweries and signature cocktails, ensuring there’s something for every taste.
MUSIC, DJS & FESTIVAL ENERGY
Music and culture are central to the Freight Island experience. Launching with a Festival of Football this summer, the venue will host DJs, live performances, and large-scale screenings across multiple zones.
Festival-inspired sets curated by Luke Una (É Soul Cultura) and Paul Stewart will bring local talent and high-energy entertainment together in a way Newcastle hasn’t seen before. Later in the year, a 1,200-capacity indoor rooftop venue will open, creating a dedicated home for touring and local artists while strengthening the city’s thriving music scene.
SUPPORT FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY
Freight Island is also about community impact. The project is expected to create over 300 jobs in hospitality, events, production, and creative industries. Partnerships with Newcastle United Foundation, Newcastle College and Generator will support young people, nurture emerging artists, and ensure the venue reflects the city’s diverse creative community.
With first-look visuals, world-class food, immersive music and cultural programming, Freight Island Newcastle is shaping up to be the city’s must-visit rooftop destination -a lifestyle, a festival, and a bold statement that the North East’s night-time scene has truly arrived.
