The North East’s best-kept quiet luxury secrets
Luxury doesn’t have to shout about itself. In fact, the best kind rarely does.
And if you’re looking for things to do in Newcastle and beyond that feel indulgent without being over the top (or draining your bank account), you’ll find plenty of them right here.
Because in the North East, this kind of luxury has always existed. You just don’t need a postcode starting with SW to experience it.
Up here, indulgence looks a little different. It’s long lunches that turn into lazy afternoons. Spa evenings that feel like a treat, not a financial commitment. The gig you stumbled into for a tenner that ends up being the best night of your month. The train journey you didn’t rush. The extra hour at the table just because you could.
Luxury in the North East isn’t loud, it’s woven into everyday life, in warmth, generosity and the sense that things don’t need to be overdone to be good.
Quiet luxury doesn’t need to shout. And up here, we’ve been doing it long before it had a name.
A MID-WEEK LUNCH THAT TURNS INTO AN AFTERNOON
Real luxury is ordering dessert without checking the time. Across the region, there are a handful of low-key spots where lunch naturally drifts.
Mean Bean Coffee, Alnwick
In Alnwick, cafés just off the main drag encourage you to sit a little longer once the tourists thin out. Try Mean Bean Coffee for one of their delightful coffees (or two), whilst embracing the quirky décor – you’ll be in there for hours.
The Old Yard Tapas Bar, Darlington
In Darlington, independent kitchens serve menus that feel more thoughtful than flashy, the kind where everything is cooked properly and nothing’s rushed. The Old Yard Tapas Bar on Bondgate is the perfect spot for this. Think cosy nooks to sit and enjoy a huge variety of tapas dishes that will literally have you ordering your third round.
Muse, Yarm
Down in Yarm, bistros on the high street offer weekday lunch menus that feel like a reward rather than a convenience. Muse is a continental café that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their menus are made up of classic flavoursome dishes with a twist, served simply with the emphasis on quality ingredients. The restaurant also boasts a licensed pavement café, giving that real Parisian-café feel.
SPA TIME WITHOUT THE SHOW
Forget robes-and-prosecco theatre – some of the region’s best spa experiences are the ones that keep things simple.
Evening spa access in quieter wellness centres across County Durham and Northumberland offers a few blissful hours of warmth, steam and silence. No full-day commitment, no overnight stay – just enough time to switch your brain off and reset.
It’s the kind of indulgence you can slot into a normal week, which somehow makes it feel even more special.
Village Farm Health Club & Spa, Alnwick
Village Farm Health Club & Spa in Alnwick is the ideal place for that well-earned refresh. Spend an hour or so in their fully equipped gym, then head across to the pool where their heated loungers do the perfect job of soothing tired muscles.
TRAIN RIDES FOR THE VIEW, NOT THE DESTINATION
One of the North East’s most overlooked luxuries is how good the rail journeys are – especially if you’re not in a hurry.
It’s a small, affordable escape and you don’t even need to leave the region.
Weardale Railway
Routes cutting through Weardale, skirting the Durham coastline, or heading north toward Alnmouth offer long stretches of countryside, rivers and sky. Grab a window seat, put your phone away and let the landscape do the work. Keep an eye on the Weardale Railway website, supported by The Auckland Project, which will soon announce its 2026 timetable.
£5 GIGS AND INTIMATE LIVE MUSIC
Live music doesn’t have to mean arena crowds or £80 tickets.
Across the region, small venues, pubs and community spaces host gigs for a fiver – sometimes less. Folk sessions, acoustic sets, emerging bands, jazz nights and spoken word events all offer that rare feeling of closeness between audience and performer.
In Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham and Middlesbrough, these nights often feel more memorable than bigger shows. You hear the music properly. You talk to strangers. You leave feeling part of something, which is a kind of luxury money can’t really buy.
Little Buildings, Ouseburn
One of our favourite independent venues located in Ouseburn is Little Buildings, a place where you can see a heavy metal band one night, then a solo instrumentalist another. Their gigs are always affordable and it’s a chance to support the region’s original live music scene.
BOOKSHOPS, LIBRARIES AND WARM CORNERS
Quiet luxury also shows up in places that ask very little of you.
Second-hand bookshops, independent libraries and reading rooms across the North East offer warmth, calm and mental space. Places where you can sit, read, think or simply exist without pressure to consume.
Keel Row Books, Whitley Bay
Keel Row Books in Whitley Bay is the longest-established rare and collectable bookshop in the North East. As specialists in first editions and signed copies, you could spend hours in here browsing the shelves, delving into books about the history of the region.
OFF-PEAK CULTURE AND MATINEE MAGIC
One of the region’s best-kept secrets is how good off-peak culture can be.
Midweek theatre tickets, daytime exhibitions and matinee screenings are often cheaper, calmer and more intimate. Regional theatres and galleries across the North East shine during these quieter hours, offering the same quality without the crowds.
Newcastle Theatre Royal
For those aged 18-30, Newcastle Theatre Royal are offering theatre tickets from just £10. This is a chance to discover new shows and to immerse yourself in breathtaking artistry in a more relaxed setting.
