A discovery that would be considered remarkable even in Paris has surfaced somewhere far less expected – Cramlington.

This incredible archive, which has now been unveiled by Newcastle’s luxury retailer RE:BOURN, was discovered after a chance meeting.

The collector, a North East woman, first crossed paths with RE:BOURN at one of their pop-up events at the Biscuit Factory. What she revealed was nothing short of astonishing: over 50 rare Chanel pieces, spanning the early 1980s to early 2000s, amassed from Chanel boutiques across the world.

Many of the pieces would be difficult to source in any fashion capital of the world today, let alone the North East of England. quietly preserved in a Northumberland home for decades.

What makes the collection even more exceptional is how it was built. The collector’s husband traveled extensively, bringing back garments from exclusive Chanel stores in global fashion capitals – some of which only carried limited editions unique to their location, At a time when many of these designs were produced in far smaller runs and distributed selectively, acquiring them required access, timing and instinct.

These rare, boutique-specific releases – from Paris to Toyko ( and everywhere in between) – were brought together under one roof in the North East, making the collection unique even by global standards.

Among the highlights are pieces from the early runway years of Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel – a transformative era that reshaped the house for the modern age.

The collection includes iconic tweeds, sharp tailoring, bold evening silhouettes and highly collectible designs from the 90s and early 2000s as seen on one of the most iconic runway shows featuring supermodels, Linda Evangelista Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer, wearing garments that represent pivotal moments in fashion history.

For RE:BOURN founder Sophie Cabourn, the discovery felt surreal and serendipitous.

“You expect to see collections like this in Paris, or locked away in major private archives. To find it in Cramlington, and to realise it had been sitting there all this time, was unbelievable. These pieces aren’t just beautiful, they’re cultural artefacts. Knowing they’ve been preserved here in the North East makes it even more special.

“To find such a concentrated archive, carefully stored and entirely authentic, is rare anywhere in the world. To find it in Cramlington is almost unheard of.

“What makes the story even more compelling is its sense of place. At a time when fashion narratives are often centred on global capitals, this archive challenges the assumption that important style only lives in major cities. Sometimes, it’s been quietly waiting closer to home.”
