The secret to making friends is joining a club – here are the North East ones to know
First there’s school friends, then there’s work friends, then we get into our 20s and 30s only to realise we haven’t formed a new friendship in years.
It’s not a mystery, it’s psychology.
True friendships are built from shared experiences and shared interests. And they last from building trust, emotional support and feeling seen and understood.
The trouble is, as life changes and we start prioritising relationships and career goals, we stop putting ourselves in new environments and pursuing hobbies that lead to shared experiences with potential friends.
Even if we meet someone new, often the process of going from acquaintance to friend can feel complicated and forced.
The good news is the solution is really simple. Put yourself in situations that align with your interests and values that meet on a regular basis.
Yes, we’re talking about joining a club.
The consistency of meeting regularly allows for friendships to unfold naturally and for existing relationships to grow stronger. There’s no need for the (sometimes awkward) ‘hey, we should totally grab coffee sometime’ DM. You’re already in each other’s lives.
Even if you don’t meet your new bestie, when you join any club you’ll form connections with people who share your interests, your point of view and have new experiences together.
It’s the easiest way to add more fun and play in your life – no matter your age!
So whether you’re a book worm, a creative or sporty, here are some clubs to check out across the North East to make new friends in 2026.
BOOK CLUBS
CREATIVE CLUBS (and workshops)
RUN CLUBS
MUSICAL CLUBS (and regular events)
