Is Durham the UK’s Best ‘Small City’ Christmas Destination? A Deep Dive
If your idea of festive perfection is a place where cobbled streets glow gold under fairy lights, indie shops tempt you with beautifully wrapped treats, and a world-famous cathedral looms moodily in the mist like it’s been waiting all year for its close-up – then Durham might just be the small city that steals Christmas.
But is it truly the UK’s best? Let’s unwrap it.
A City that looks celestial
Some cities switch on their Christmas lights. Durham becomes them. Wander from the Market Place down to Saddler Street and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the final scene of a festive rom-com – ideally the kind where someone runs up a hill in impractical shoes.
The UNESCO-listed Durham Cathedral plays its part beautifully. Its towering stone arches and flickering candles turn up the drama, and December services and concerts are the sort of goosebump-inducing experiences that make even the grinchiest grin.
The Christmas markets: Small but mighty
Durham doesn’t try to out-Glühwein the big cities, and that’s its charm. The annual Christmas Festival brings stalls filled with local makers, seasonal street food, mulled everything, and the kind of handcrafted stocking fillers you genuinely don’t want to re-gift.
What sets Durham apart is how the markets spill across the city – outdoors, indoors, even inside the Cathedral Cloisters (yes, the Harry Potter ones). So instead of one big heaving crowd, you get pockets of festive magic as you explore.
Shopping with soul
If you’re tired of clone-town high streets, Durham is a breath of frosty fresh air. The indie scene thrives here, from bijou boutiques to artisan jewellers to shops filled with objects you didn’t know you needed but now absolutely must have (looking at you, hand-thrown ceramic mug shaped like a festive hedgehog).
And because the city centre is small enough to do on foot without needing a mince-pie-fuelled lie-down, it’s perfect for a leisurely, ambling, “shall we just nip in here?” sort of day. A notable mention is Moon Jewellery – delicate pieces, perfect for a special Christmas gift.
Winter walks with wow factor
Few cities can match Durham for scenery. For a breather between hot chocolates, head down to the riverside path. The reflections of the cathedral in the Wear at dusk? Chef’s kiss. Add a giant scarf and someone you like a lot, and it becomes a top-tier festive date spot.
For a woodland fix, cross to the South Bailey and dip into Durham’s Riverside Banks, where fairy lights often appear in shopfronts and college windows as term winds down.
Food, glorious festive food
Durham punches way above its weight on the food front. Expect cosy pubs doing proper winter warmers, chic restaurants with seasonal menus, and cafés where you can thaw out with a hot drink so thick it probably qualifies as dessert. Many spots offer special Christmas menus – think local produce, comfort-food classics, and the occasional fancy flourish. (Because if you can’t have a decorative sprig of holly on your pudding now, when can you?)
An HLN favourite is Faru – think an exceptional wine list, one of the best tasting menus we’ve ever had, and a moody, romantic atmosphere…
So… is it the best?
If ‘best’ means walkable, historic, atmospheric, easy to explore, filled with independent gems, and capable of delivering a Christmas mood boost that lasts until mid-January – then yes. Durham might just take the small-city crown.
It doesn’t shout. It sparkles. And honestly? That’s exactly what Christmas should feel like.
Make a stay of it by booking a room at Radisson Blu Durham– it’s so handy, has ample parking, and it’s just had a serious glow-up.
