Beamish Hall Hotel is the kind of place that instantly makes you breathe a little deeper.

Maybe it’s the long driveway brushing through woodland, or the way the building rises elegantly from the trees, or that comforting sense of stepping somewhere that feels both welcoming and wonderfully removed from the Christmas chaos.

Whatever it is, this award-winning 4* country house hotel in the Beamish Valley is exactly what we all need in the run-up to Christmas — and even more so when January calls for calm.

Whether you’re hoping for a final festive getaway, plotting a cosy girls’ night, planning a romantic winter break or seeking somewhere peaceful to reset for the new year, Beamish Hall Hotel offers the kind of experience that feels effortless.

And with packages from just £79.50, it would be really rude not to book now…

A WARM BEAMISH HALL WELCOME

From the moment you step inside this 13th-century Grade II-listed building, the atmosphere wraps around you in the best possible way. Beamish Hall wears its history proudly — a grand staircase, tall ceilings and statement fireplaces showcasing their traditional features with modern comfort.

The welcome is just as charming. Jasmine at reception welcomed us like old friends, nothing was too much to ask. Setting the tone for a stay that feels personal rather than polished or formal. As you move through the grand entrance pillars and see the fires burning, you instantly understand why so many guests return year after year.

We stayed in The Lily, one of the newest feature suites, and it’s an absolute treat. Think provincial French furniture, garden views through tall sliding sash windows, cosy seating bathed in natural light and a soothing, relaxed palette. Throw in a roll-top bath big enough for a long winter soak, sparkling chandeliers in every room and you’re halfway to switching off before you’ve even unpacked.

The special touches really do elevate the stay: a chilled bottle of prosecco waiting on arrival, Beamish-branded chocolates, luxury Cole & Lewis toiletries, a coffee machine, Ringtons tea and biscuits, sparkling chandeliers and spotless presentation throughout. It all feels thoughtful, warm and well put-together — exactly what you want from a winter retreat.

The grounds are especially lovely at this time of year. With the woodland frosted at the edges and the Forest of Light trail illuminated just outside, even a simple wander becomes something quietly enchanting. Couples stroll hand-in-hand, families explore the pathways, and solo travellers meander with a hot drink in hand. It’s peaceful, grounding and incredibly easy to settle into.

Eat, drink and get cosy at The Stables

Food is a big part of any winter getaway, and Beamish Hall gets it right. The Stables Bar & Restaurant — a beautifully restored 18th-century stable block — is all stone floors, rustic beams, low lighting and the comforting glow of log fires. It’s the kind of dining room where you immediately decide you’re not rushing anywhere.

The menu celebrates hearty, seasonal dishes using locally sourced ingredients. On our visit, we started with a refreshing avocado and prawn cocktail before moving on to slow-cooked lamb that literally melted apart, served with all the classic trimmings done exactly right. For Dessert wee shared trio of banoffee cheesecakes that hit that sweet spot light but still indulgent – perfect for after a Sunday roast.

We really could see why Sunday  here are a locals favourite,  so its worth booking ahead if you’re planning a lazy weekend stay.

Plus, The Coach House Café is another gem for casual lunches between Monday and Saturday, while breakfast each morning is a highlight in its own right. Whether you opt for the cooked-to-order Full English or the new self-serve continental spread, it’s the kind of breakfast worth lingering over with a second coffee.

A peaceful County Durham base

Beamish Hall is perfectly placed for exploring County Durham. You’re just a mile from the award-winning Beamish Museum (with hotel guests enjoying 15% off annual passes) and only a short drive from both Durham and Newcastle. Whether you’re into heritage, shopping, culture or cafes, everything is close enough to enjoy without sacrificing the tranquillity of your base.

Still, it’s equally perfect for those who want to switch off entirely. With EV charging points, family-friendly room options and two new feature suites (Iris and Lily) offering elevated comfort, Beamish Hall really does cater to every type of getaway.

And here’s the real insider tip: January is one of the best times to stay. The post-Christmas lull brings quieter corridors, calmer dining rooms and a soothing atmosphere across the grounds. Long breakfasts, long baths, quiet woodland strolls and early nights by the fire suddenly feel not like luxuries, but necessities. It’s a reset you can feel.
