These local community groups are making a difference in the North East this Christmas
As Newcastle wraps itself in fairy lights and the carols kick in, a quieter kind of magic is happening across the city.
Local community groups are quietly stepping up – not just to sprinkle a little festive cheer, but to offer real, practical support when it matters most.
Tackling food poverty with heart
The Newcastle United Foundation, in collaboration with the Magpies, has launched its annual ‘A Helping Hand at Christmas’ campaign – giving time, money, and warmth to people across Tyneside. They’re donating £150,000 to Newcastle West End Foodbank and opening up their NUCASTLE community hub as a warm, safe space every evening. Visitors can drop by for free refreshments, Wi-Fi, games, and even screenings of Christmas films. On top of that, staff volunteering is a huge part of the effort, with thousands of hours pledged to help local families in need.
Sharing community – one meal at a time
The People’s Kitchen, a deeply local, volunteer-led charity, has brought back its ever-important ‘Feed a Friend for a Fiver’ scheme. For just £5, you can fund a hot festive dinner for someone who might otherwise go hungry – a simple act that resonates big during a tough winter.
Redistributing surplus food (and hope)
FareShare North East are also part of this year’s ‘Big Give Christmas Challenge’, where every donation made between 2–9 December will be doubled, instantly doubling its impact. Their goal is to raise £20,000, which would help turn more than 70 tonnes of surplus food into over 165,000 meals for communities across the region. It’s a simple way to make a huge difference, and the kind of festive generosity that genuinely changes lives.
Rebuilding bonds and beating isolation
For adults with learning disabilities or autism, Friends Action North East (FANE) is making sure Christmas doesn’t mean isolation. Their community groups, mentoring, and social nights mean people don’t just connect – they thrive. These connections matter more than ever during the winter months.
Health, resilience and festive joy
Children North East’s ‘Be a Lifeline’ Christmas campaign is calling on people across Tyneside to sponsor Christmas packs for vulnerable children – full of warm clothing, gifts and essentials to help make their festive season brighter. With every £25 donation, you completely change a child’s December, offering not just joy, but hope.
Helping our four-legged friends, too
And let’s not forget our furry friends: the Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter holds a Christmas market each year, raising funds to support both pets and people. For locals who might otherwise struggle – and for animals who deserve a warm place to call home. This kind of outreach is a reminder that compassion knows no species.
