10 reasons to stay over in NewcastleGateshead this winter

Why rush home when the night’s just getting started?

Newcastle and Gateshead come alive after dark – from Christmas markets and candlelit dinners to intimate cocktail spots and late-night culture.

It’s the season to make a night of it, so instead of grabbing a taxi home, you could wake up to skyline views, lazy brunches and another day in one of the UK’s friendliest cities.

Plus, with easy transport links by train, the whole trip can be relaxed from start to finish.

Here are ten reasons to stay over…

Blackfriars Restaurant Newcastle

1. Because dinner’s too good to rush

Newcastle’s restaurant scene is the perfect excuse to stay late, take your time, and enjoy a bottle of good wine. Blackfriars, located in a former 13th century refectory, is the perfect spot for cosy winter dining. The dining room, believed to be the oldest in the UK, is filled with atmosphere, and the award-winning British food menu uses the best seasonal produce from local farms and producers. If you fancy something more laid-back, Dakwala brings flavours from the streets of Bombay to Newcastle, or Sapori brings and authentic Italian experience to Gateshead (the crab meat and prawn pasta is so good. For something a bit different, Triple A Food Tours take you on a culinary journey of the best spots around the region.

2. Because cocktails and wine taste better after midnight

No designated drivers here. Leave the car at home and make it a night to remember with a proper cocktail crawl. Sip an East 8 Hold Up at one of the UK’s Top 50 Cocktail Bars, Mother Mercy, or try the wine dispenser at Fuego inside Fenwick, letting you try high quality wines served at the perfect temperature. The luxe bar at Gaucho is the perfect place to indulge in some late night drinks – we highly recommend the Banana Pecan Old Fashioned. Head across the High Level Bridge to find a hidden gem underneath the arches – Victor Indigo November (VIN) is an independent wine shop, tasting room and bar, serving up delicious wines as well as French-inspired sharing plates and snacks.

The Glasshouse

3. Because you’ll want to dance, laugh or sing along

When the encore hits, there’s no reason to leave early. Catch live music at The Glasshouse, gigs at The Cluny or The Grove, and big comedy nights at The Stand and Tyne Theatre & Opera House. Looking for an after-party? The dancefloor at PILGRIM is always bouncing with soul and funk tunes, or head to World Headquarters for some of the best clubbing in Newcastle. Whether you’re belting out bangers with a tribute band or discovering the next big thing, make a night of it and turn your ticket into a mini break.

4. Because hotel pillows beat taxis home

There’s nothing quite like slipping into crisp hotel sheets after a night in the city. Check in at INNSiDE by Meliá Newcastle for Quayside views, Dakota for moody luxurious vibes, or Hilton Newcastle Gateshead for something stylish and modern. Want something sleek and central? Motel One puts you in walking distance of it all. For the ultimate treat, the new Hotel Gotham is opening in November 2025 and is one not to miss.

5. Because breakfast tastes better when someone else makes it

A lie in and a relaxing breakfast before checking out are the vibes we’re going for this winter. Wake up and recover with a Full English in your hotel, or head to Big River Bakery a small-batch bakery specialising in slow ferment, handmade breads and baked goods that are so fresh they’re often served warm if you get there early enough. If you’re still in a party mode, bottomless brunch at Banyan is a great shout.

6. Because the Christmas markets are calling

Winter in Newcastle is pure magic. Wander between twinkling stalls at the Newcastle Christmas Markets, sip mulled wine under the lights of Grey Street and stop by the Fenwick Christmas Window for a festive fix. Make a weekend of it and squeeze in skating at the Centre for Life, or a little Christmas shopping spree in Eldon Square while you’re here.

7. Because the culture is worth staying for

The fun doesn’t stop when the curtain rises. Newcastle Theatre Royal has so many great shows on this season, including, of course, the annual pantomime, which this year is Aladdin. The Baltic stays open until 6.00pm, meaning you can catch some exhibitions after-dark and take in the panoramic views of the Quayside. Or venture a little further afield to visit Ad Gefrin – a museum and whisky distillery in Northumberland, which has a great range of seasonal events to enjoy, and a great brasserie for an early dinner.

8. Because self-care counts as nightlife

Sometimes the best nights are the ones that end in a robe, not a nightclub, and there are some great hotel spas to explore. The Crowne Plaza’s Mineral House Spa offers a sanctuary in the heart of the city, with a range of great value spa packages. The best bit? You can float straight up to your room afterwards.

Eldon Square Christmas

Because Christmas shopping deserves a reward

With Eldon SquareFenwick Newcastle, Metrocentre and many independent gems around High Bridge and Ouseburn, Newcastle and Gateshead are a shopper’s dream. When your bags are full and your feet are tired, head for a glass of wine and a comfy hotel bed – you’ve earned it.

10. Because mornings by the Quayside are magic

Mornings don’t get much better than watching the sun glowing on the bridges of the Tyne. Grab a coffee, get some steps in, and take in the magic. Stay overnight and you’ll see NewcastleGateshead in a whole new light. Plus, if you’re here on a Sunday, the Quayside comes alive with the weekly Quayside market, where you can enjoy some local street food and pick up some unique treasures.
