November Movie Guide: Big drama, big stars and a little Christmas magic
Whether you’re craving an edge-of-your-seat thriller, a bit of feel-good sparkle or a world-saving anti-hero, there’s something for everyone – and yes, it’s officially acceptable to start watching Christmas films.
Here’s what’s worth booking tickets for this month…
Predator: Badlands – out 7th November
Predator: Badlands stars Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and is set in the future on a remote planet, where a young Predator (Schuster-Koloamatangi), outcast from his clan, finds an unlikely ally in Thia (Fanning) and embarks on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, this movie flips the lore of the original Predator films, turning the villain into an anti-hero to root for.
The Choral – out 7th November
Ralph Fiennes leads an excellent ensemble in this funny and moving First World War drama by beloved writer Alan Bennett. In 1916, as war rages on the Western Front, a Yorkshire village’s choral society finds its ranks depleted as men head off to join the army. With the annual performance looming, the society is forced to change its entry rules to enlist some unlikely teens, and the musically gifted but socially scandalous Dr Guthrie. Brimming with humour and hope, Bennett and director Nicholas Hytner (The Madness of King George, The History Boys, The Lady in the Van) celebrate the power of community in the darkest of days.
The Running Man – out 7th November
In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television. A deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins. Every move is broadcast to a bloodthirsty public, and each day brings a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben’s defiance, instincts and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favourite, and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger.
Die My Love – out 7th November
Die My Love follows Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) and her partner Jackson (Robert Pattinson), who have recently moved into an old house deep in the countryside. With ambitions to write the great American novel, Grace settles into her new environment, and the couple welcome a baby soon after. However, with Jackson frequently (and suspiciously) absent, and the pressures of domestic life mounting, Grace begins to unravel, leaving a path of destruction in her wake. This psychological black comedy-drama is directed by Lynne Ramsay.
Now You See Me, Now You Don’t – out 14th November
The Four Horsemen return, along with a new generation of illusionists, to fire up this threequel with a whole top hat full of tricks. Expect mind-melting twists, turns, surprises and magic as they perform their most daring illusion yet: stealing the world’s largest diamond from the infamous Vanderberg crime family. As they recruit three new magicians to pull off the impossible, their loyalties are tested and nothing is as it seems. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Now You See Me 3 stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Rosamund Pike and Morgan Freeman.
Nuremberg – out 14th November
Historical drama Nuremberg, directed by James Vanderbilt, brings to life the true story of the post-war trials that followed World War Two. The film follows American psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek), assigned to assess the mental fitness of high-ranking Nazi prisoners. His most challenging subject is Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe), Hitler’s closest confidant, leading to a tense psychological battle between morality and madness. The film also stars Michael Shannon, Richard E. Grant and Leo Woodall.
Christmas Karma – out 14th November
British director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham, Blinded by the Light) brings us Christmas Karma – a joyous, colourful, feel-good Bollywood-inspired musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The film features a star-studded cast including The Big Bang Theory’s Kunal Nayyar as Mr Sood, and Eva Longoria, Billy Porter and Boy George as the ghosts of Past, Present and Future. Danny Dyer, Pixie Lott, Charithra Chandran and Hugh Bonneville round out the all-star cast. Expect an eclectic soundtrack influenced by gospel, carols, rap and pop, and a festive dose of heart and humour.
The Thing with Feathers – out 21st November
Following the death of his wife, a young father (Benedict Cumberbatch) struggles to hold onto reality as a strange presence begins to stalk him and his two sons. A crow-like figure, voiced by David Thewlis, seems to emerge from the father’s own illustrations and soon becomes a haunting part of their lives. Adapted from Max Porter’s Grief is the Thing with Feathers, this lyrical drama explores love, loss and the strange ways we heal.
Wicked: For Good – out 21st November
Wicked: For Good, the sequel to 2024’s Wicked, is the second in a two-part film adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu. Years after the events of the first film, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), now known as the Wicked Witch of the West, continues her fight for animal rights while living as a fugitive. Meanwhile, Glinda (Ariana Grande), now Glinda the Good, is a celebrated public figure watched over by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). When Dorothy Gale unexpectedly arrives, the world of Oz is changed forever.
