People watching in Newcastle: our go-to restaurants and cafes
People watching is not just an art – it’s a skill
We’ve all been there, waiting for a plane to board or glancing around the pub when your date goes up to the bar, making up an origin story about how that couple met or silently laughing at something someone said.
But what if instead of a fleeting moment in your day, you actually set aside some time to yourself to let your mind wander and simply…people watched?
If you’ve never done it before, it’s truly as simple as it sounds.
Most of us rarely, if ever, go to a cafe or restaurant by ourselves with no agenda in our own city. But that’s the beauty of it.
Walking in and saying ‘table for one’ is a lot easier than you think. In fact, it’s a huge confidence boost to do something all on your own and totally enjoy it.
The secret to heading out on a solo date is bringing a little activity with you. This should be simple like a book to read or a journal and pen. You could also bring a knitting project or colored pencils to doodle, it’ll help to keep your hands busy if you’re a bit nervous, and get you into your creative mind.
So what makes a great people watching spot? Good food and coffee is a must of course, then you just need a table by the window that faces onto a high foot traffic street — lucky for us, Newcastle has plenty.
Here are our go-to spots:
100 Grey Street
100 Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6BR
Tried and tested, 100 Grey Street is one of our favourite spots for spending an afternoon. There are multiple window seats that face onto one of Newcastle’s most iconic streets making it the ultimate spot to people watch. Coffee, tea or a glass of wine, take your pick, then sit back and enjoy.
The Flower Cafe
Grainger Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 5AF
Just steps from Monument metro, this aesthetic cafe has a huge outdoor patio and everything from lattes to brunch to sweet treats. Their outdoor seating is the place to be on a sunny day, and it gives you a front row seat to Grainger Street so you can people watch to your hearts content.
Soufflé Baby
85 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4AE
On the corner of Westgate Road and Clayton Street, Soufflé Baby is just far enough from the high street that it still feels busy without being overwhelming. They have ‘people watching approved’ bar seating facing out huge windows where you can gaze out and enjoy fluffy Japanese pancakes and boba. A dream Sunday activity.
Butakun
105-115 Percy Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RY
Across from Haymarket metro, this little Japanese place serves delicious, oversized ramen bowls and has great window seating. In Japan, solo dining is so common they even have a word for it, ‘hitorimeshi’, and ramen bars are the go-to place for a solo meal. If there’s anywhere to test out an evening of people watching – Butakun is the place.
Gino D’Acampo
Bridge Court, Riverview, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3BE
There’s no people watching like quayside people watching. There’s something about the proximity to the water that makes everyone so…happy. Their outdoor patio lets you dine (and drink) al fresco. This is the ultimate spot if you’re also into dog watching.
Claremont Teahouse
1 Eldon Place, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RD
Perfect, sunny, window seating and a dedicated Dot Bagels menu, Claremont Teahouse is just next to Newcastle University, where all the cute, young students pass by, making it an ideal spot to people watch. They have food and drinks all day long and even afternoon tea if you’re thinking of spoiling yourself on your solo date.
