Inside The Dog Grocer: The eco-friendly pet shop in Heaton everyone’s talking about

North East Dog lovers, we’ve discovered a dog shop you never knew you needed – introducing Jess Fox & Hound The Dog Grocer.
Run by the friendly and knowledgeable founder Jess Fox and Libby Hall (formerly Boston Barks), this shop on the heart of Heaton Road offers a whole new way to care for your pup.
Think refill shop but tailored for your dog. It’s eco-conscious, beautifully curated and filled with everything from sustainable chews to refillable shampoo.
Expect plenty of happy, wagging tails after a trip to The Dog Grocer – it’s literally doggy heaven.
THE REFILL SHOP, BUT FOR DOGS
Tucked in the heart of Newcastle, The Dog Grocer is one of the UK’s first low-waste dog shops.
Inside, you’ll find a calm, thoughtfully designed space where you can browse a pick-and-mix selection of treats, natural supplements, enrichment toys, chews, collars, harnesses and more. Everything’s handpicked for quality and sustainability.
Just like a refill shop for humans, you’re encouraged to bring your own containers (or grab one in store) to stock up on doggy essentials. From kibble, training treats, grooming products and more, it’s a small change that makes a big difference.
MEET DYNAMIC DUO BEHIND THE DOG GROCER
A lifelong dog lover, professional dog walker and passionate advocate for the planet, Jess has created something truly special – a welcoming space where you can find premium products, reliable advice and a genuine sense of community.
Now joined by Libby – formerly of Boston Barks – this dynamic duo is combining their deep doggy knowledge and shared values to bring you only the very best in high-quality, sustainable dog care. Together, they’re now dominating the North East’s dog-loving scene.
Whether you’re wondering about nutrition, behaviour or enrichment, The Dog Grocer are always happy to chat and share their knowledge. They’re friendly, approachable and genuinely care about your dog’s wellbeing (and will also provide plenty of pets and treats.)
MORE THAN JUST A DOG SHOP
What makes The Dog Grocer stand out is their sense of community and sustainability, making eco-friendly dog ownership accessible.
They’ve really thought of everything. You’ll even find a Jess Lost & Found rack of preloved gear, they accept Terracycle drop-offs for hard-to-recycle pet items like collars and leads and even offer a dog-friendly dry-cleaning service, Laundromutt, for beds, towels and blankets.
They’re also planning events and workshops, so definitely keep an eye on their Instagram for the latest updates. Whether it’s training advice, social dog walks or new product updates, there’s always something brewing.
WHY IT MATTERS
Let’s face it — having a dog can leave a pretty big environmental pawprint. From endless treat bags to plastic toys and fast-fashion collars, it all adds up. Some experts say dog ownership can have a footprint the same owning an SUV.
But The Dog Grocer are proving it doesn’t have to be that way. By stocking products made from recycled, natural or reusable materials and championing a refill model, they’re helping people make better choices – one treat jar at a time.
Whether you’re just starting your low-waste journey or already knee-deep in compostable poo bags and homemade food, The Dog Grocer is a place where you and your pup can shop with purpose.
WHAT SOME HAPPY PAWRENTS HAVE TO SAY
“Remy and I recently visited The Dog Grocer, and we’ll definitely be back. Jess and Libby clearly know their stuff — they were so lovely with Remy and he adored the attention. I’m always looking for long-lasting treats that are good for his teeth and they had so many great options. It’s fantastic to have an independent shop that really cares about happy, healthy dogs.”
— Rosie and Remy
“I’ve been going to The Dog Grocer since Goose was a tiny puppy, and honestly, I don’t know what I’d have done without Jess. From teething chews to training treats and food he actually enjoys, everything has been of amazing quality. He’s obsessed with the fruit wrapped in chicken breast. Jess always takes the time to give tailored advice, and it never feels salesy — just genuinely helpful. We’re even joining their group dog walks soon. I can’t recommend them enough.”
