The local heroes shaping safer communities – and how you can join them
From patrolling neighbourhood streets to building real relationships with local residents, neighbourhood policing is about so much more than just enforcing the law, it’s about being part of the community.
And right now, Northumbria Police are not only growing their team but leading the way in how people can get involved.
Over the next year, the Northumbria Police will recruit an extra 95 Neighbourhood Officers, 27 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and 30 Special Constables – and they’re offering a brand-new way to join.
In fact, they’re currently the only police force in the country to offer a direct route into neighbourhood policing – a move that’s set to redefine how people begin their careers in law enforcement.
Neighbourhood Policing Week was last week, and we caught up with PC Caroline Codd, who’s been a neighbourhood officer for four years, to hear what it’s really like on the ground.
As well as Assistant Chief Officer Joscelin Lawson, who’s leading this ambitious recruitment drive, to find out how it works – and why you should consider applying.
“No two days are ever the same – and that’s what I love”
– PC Caroline Codd
PC Caroline Codd didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a police officer – but four years into the job, she can’t imagine doing anything else.
“I genuinely enjoy talking to people and getting involved with the local community,’ she said. ‘There’s something special about being a familiar face and being regarded as a “local bobby.” I really believe that helps build trust and create real connection.”
For Caroline, the heart of neighbourhood policing is about looking out for others, from preventing crime to supporting vulnerable people and safeguarding victims.
‘Knowing I can contribute to making a difference in people’s lives is genuinely fulfilling. I also love seeing things through from beginning to end and watching a positive outcome unfold.
“Each day brings something new – whether it’s talking to different people, handling new challenges or working with other organisations. It never gets boring and I’m always learning.”
Her message to anyone thinking of applying?
“Go ahead and do it! It’s a chance to make a real difference, be part of a fantastic team, and grow in ways you never expected – both personally and professionally. If you want a job that matters, this is it.”
THIS IS VISIBLE POLICING THAT MAKES A LONG-TERM DIFFERENCE
While traditional policing often brings to mind blue lights and fast responses, neighbourhood policing is all about proactive, everyday engagement – working within communities to understand what really matters to local people.
Assistant Chief Officer Joscelin Lawson explains:
“Neighbourhood policing is incredibly important in tackling the issues which affect people most – from anti-social behaviour to crime prevention. It’s not just about reacting to incidents; it’s about working alongside communities and partners to find long-term solutions.”
And with their new recruitment pathway, Northumbria Police are opening the doors for even more people to get involved.
“We’re the first and currently only force in the country offering a direct route into community policing. That means recruits will specialise in neighbourhood work from day one, developing the specific skills they need to really make an impact.”
Even better? You can gain a degree while training, with plenty of support along the way.
“We’re looking for people who care about their communities and want to make a difference. Don’t let anything hold you back – we want applicants from all walks of life.”
