Recipes, Remedies & Raby: A Taste of History – Raby Castle

Raby Castle’s historic medieval kitchen hosts A Taste of History with the Castle’s Archivist, part of this summer’s Castle in Bloom celebrations.

You’ll explore how plants have always shaped life at Raby, not just on the plate, but in healing and household medicine too, delving into rarely-seen recipe books to uncover what was cooked, eaten and prescribed across the generations.

From everyday meals to grand feasts, and soothing herbal infusions to curious medicinal preparations, you’ll see how new ingredients and healing plants travelled to the estate through trade and changing tastes across Britain and beyond. It’s an engaging show-and-tell session, with some historic Raby recipes you could even try at home.
