Open Air Theatre: The Pirates of Penzance – County Durham
The Amphitheatre at Raby Castle hosts Illyria Theatre’s lively open-air performance of the much-loved comic opera The Pirates of Penzance, set against the Castle’s stunning backdrop.
It’s family-friendly fun for children of all ages, following Frederic, accidentally apprenticed to a band of pirates as a child, as he tries to escape his fate and win the heart of his beloved Mabel.
Performed by a talented six-strong cast of actor-singers with a fully orchestrated score, expect some of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous songs, including “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General” and “A Policeman’s Lot Is Not a Happy One.” Doors open at 5:30pm, so bring a picnic, your own seating and a poncho rather than an umbrella if rain’s forecast, plus boards, platters and drinks available to order on the night.
