Mignard: The Power of Posing – South Shields
South Shields Museum & Art Gallery has been chosen as one of just four venues nationwide to host the National Gallery’s Masterpiece Tour, bringing a world-class painting to the North East.
At its heart is The Marquise de Seignelay, a striking 1691 portrait by Pierre Mignard, one of 17th-century France’s most celebrated portraitists.
The free exhibition, subtitled The Power of Posing, explores how every detail of a portrait, the pose, the clothing, the setting and expression, was carefully crafted to tell the sitter’s story. Look closely and meet the gaze of each subject to uncover their ambitions, status and the lives they led. A rare chance to see a National Gallery masterpiece on your doorstep.
