Roaring fire, Michelin-starred cooking and a medieval village dusted with winter charm: Rogan & Co. in Cartmel is a festive day out worth setting off early for.

Why it’s special

Rogan & Co. is Simon Rogan’s neighbourhood restaurant in the heart of Cartmel, a medieval Lake District village. It opened in 2008 and holds a Michelin star. Simon is best known for the three Michelin-starred L’Enclume just down the road, and this is the more relaxed sibling, with the same standards in a cosier setting.

The cooking is modern British and driven by the seasons. Much of the produce is grown at Simon’s Our Farm in the Cartmel Valley, which supplies the restaurant, with the rest coming from trusted suppliers in the region. It means the menu is closely tied to what’s growing right now, which is part of what makes a winter visit so good.

Inside, it’s all low lights and a roaring fire, which is exactly what you want from a cosy festive meal.

The festive menu

Rogan & Co.’s Full Festive Menu runs from Tuesday 15th December to Saturday 2nd January (excluding closure days) at £125 per person. It’s a long, unhurried tasting menu that reworks the Christmas dinner without ever feeling predictable.

It opens with the snacks: a roasted cipollini onion dashi, a fig leaf glazed truffle pudding with black garlic and glazed wholemeal rolls with sage and onion butter.

There’s an organic grain ragout with Cumbrian cep, Maran yolk and glazed hen of the woods (our editor’s favourite dish), then hot smoked chalk stream trout with Boltardy beetroot, Granny Smith apple and spruce. Orkney scallop with celeriac and smoked scallop cream is available as a supplementary extra course.

The main event is roasted Goosnargh turkey breast with stuffing, creamed potato, miso sprouts, roasted carrots and parsnip.

Pudding is a baked rice pudding with egg nog ice cream, preserved damson and candied popcorn, which sounds unusual but is completely moreish.

The finishing touches are bite-sized: a caramelised apple pastille and a gingerbread chocolate tartlet.

Set aside three hours to fully enjoy this menu at your own pace. A wine flight is available to accompany it, as well as a soft drink version that doesn’t feel like you’re missing out. Perfect if you’re the designated driver.

This is the full festive menu, but shorter dinner menus and lunch menus are also available.

Make a night of it

Cartmel is a good two and a half hours or so from Newcastle, so we’d suggest not rushing back. Rogan & Co. has 16 bedrooms and suites around the village, each with its own style and nods to the historic surroundings.

A Stay and Dine package includes dinner from the Short Menu and breakfast the following morning, for £507.

Between lunch, a wander round the village and an overnight stay, it becomes a very luxurious festive break.
