Randox Health Newcastle reveals 1 in 3 women lack iron – here’s the test to book

Randox Health Newcastle has opened its doors, and it’s the company’s first permanent clinic in the North East.

Tucked inside John Lewis Newcastle at Eldon Square, it brings seriously advanced diagnostic tech right into the heart of the city centre.

It’s opened just in time for October, when Randox Health’s raising awareness of iron deficiency in women, and the numbers will shock you. Its own research found more than one in three women aged 18–49 tested had absolute iron deficiency, almost one in 10 were anaemic, and 52.4% of those low on iron had no symptoms at all.

As women, we’re far too used to having our concerns brushed off. Now there’s finally somewhere on our doorstep to get real answers, without waiting weeks for a GP appointment.

WHY THE NORTH EAST’S NEW CLINIC MATTERS

A permanent home in Newcastle means North East women don’t have to look further afield for this kind of in-depth testing. It’s right in the city centre and easy to reach, so you can book a blood test on your lunch break or tag it onto a shopping trip in Eldon Square.

There’s no GP referral needed and no long wait. Most results land within one to two working days of your sample reaching the lab, with some arriving in as little as two hours. Having it on your doorstep makes the whole thing feel a lot less daunting.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU POP IN

The flagship test for women is the Everywoman Health Check, one simple blood test that includes iron and anaemia markers alongside up to 150 data points. It covers areas including nutrition, female hormones, thyroid health, liver and kidney health, heart health, bone health, diabetes and inflammation, all powered by Randox’s Biochip Technology.

Your results arrive as a personal report written in plain language, with every marker colour-coded green for in range, amber for in between and red for out of range. A Health Status overview shows at a glance how many results sit within a healthy range, and you’ll get a Health and Wellbeing discussion with one of Randox Health’s Scientific Advisors. No medical background needed.

WHY IRON’S TOP OF THE LIST THIS OCTOBER

Those figures come from Randox Health research published in Frontiers in Nutrition. Absolute iron deficiency means your body’s iron stores have run low, while being anaemic means there’s too little haemoglobin to carry oxygen around the body properly.

Periods play a part too, with 47.5% of the iron-deficient women in the study reporting heavy menstrual bleeding. And with more than half of those affected feeling completely well, feeling fine and being fine aren’t always the same thing.

THE SYMPTOMS YOU’VE PROBABLY BRUSHED OFF

When low iron does make itself known, it tends to show up as fatigue, brain fog, weakness, low mood, palpitations, shortness of breath or hair loss. Every one of these has plenty of other possible causes, from a bad run of sleep to a stressful month at work, which makes them easy to dismiss.

You might’ve also seen the ferritin face trend on social media, linking a tired or drawn appearance to low ferritin, the protein your body uses to store iron. But someone’s appearance can’t diagnose low iron, and taking supplements just in case can cause side effects and even be harmful.

Randox Health’s message is simple: test, don’t guess. Ferritin and other iron markers, read alongside a full blood count and haemoglobin, give a much clearer picture. Once you know your iron’s low, you can often tackle it through diet or appropriate supplementation.

WHY IT’S EASY TO COME BACK IN SIX MONTHS

Your health isn’t static, which is why Everywoman Complete includes repeat testing after six months. With a permanent clinic in Newcastle, popping back to see whether your diet changes or supplements have worked is no hassle at all.

You can also tailor your check with add-ons. The Anti-Müllerian Hormone test (£55) looks at your ovarian reserve and whether it’s typical for your age, ideal if you’re thinking about starting a family, IVF or egg freezing, with results taking up to three days. Other options include an Omega 3 Index, a food sensitivity test, a nutrition and lifestyle DNA test and a GP consultation.

WHAT IT CAN’T DO (AND WHAT IT CAN)

A private health check comes at a cost, and it isn’t a replacement for your GP. If your results flag something that needs attention, share them with your doctor. If you’re feeling seriously unwell, with chest pain or severe breathlessness, get medical help straight away rather than waiting for a test.

What Randox Health Newcastle does give you is quick, clear information about your own body, on your own timeline and right here in the North East. For anyone who’s ever felt unheard, that’s a pretty powerful place to start.
