Wynyard Hall offers an 18th-century chapel, lake ceremonies and a full wedding weekend

Set within a private 400-acre estate in County Durham, Wynyard Hall is an 18th-century, Grade II-listed country house where you’ll have the whole place to yourselves on your wedding day.
THE CEREMONY
Wynyard Hall is one of the few venues in the country where couples can have a religious and a civil ceremony on the same site. The choice comes down to the original 18th century chapel, adorned with Italian marble and stained-glass windows, or one of the state rooms, with their gilded ceilings and Florentine fireplaces.
During the warmer months, outdoor civil ceremonies can also be arranged on the terrace, with the private lake and 400 acres of countryside as the backdrop. Whichever ceremony a couple chooses, the reception follows on straight after, with no travelling between venues and no changing of scene halfway through the day.
THE RECEPTION
Wynyard Hall was designed and built for entertaining, and the layout still does the job two centuries on. Guests move from ceremony to drinks reception, to wedding breakfast, to drinks and dancing, passing through a new room at each stage of the day rather than staying in one space throughout.
The standout feature of this is the enfilade, a sightline that runs from the Mirror Room through the Ballroom and into the Conservatory, designed specifically with entertaining in mind. Ancillary rooms around the main sequence give couples space for rehearsal dinners, a late night bar, or a quieter corner for older guests, so the day has somewhere for every mood and moment.
THE CHAPEL
Built in the 18th century and still holding its original Italian marble and stained-glass windows, the chapel seats 120 guests across its pews, rising to 140 when the choir pews are included, and up to 200 when the Monument Room is opened up too. It’s the only on-site option for couples who want a full religious ceremony rather than a civil one.
THE MIRROR ROOM
One of the more intimate state rooms, the Mirror Room takes its name from the gold-gilded mirrors running floor to ceiling, with large windows looking out over the private lake and parkland. It holds 80 guests for a ceremony, 60 for a seated dinner, or 100 for a drinks reception. Look through from the Mirror Room towards the Ballroom and Conservatory beyond and you’ll spot the enfilade in action.
THE BALLROOM
Reached through mahogany doors, the Ballroom is lined with Siena marble pilasters and dressed in handmade gold silk curtains that frame the bay windows. Once described as one of the most magnificent rooms in the kingdom, it seats 200 for a ceremony, 110 for a seated dinner, or 200 for a drinks reception, making it one of the more flexible spaces in the house.
THE CONSERVATORY
At 27 feet high and 77 feet long, the Conservatory is Wynyard Hall’s largest and most iconic space, filled with natural daylight and once used to grow orange and lemon trees, magnolia, camellias and orchids for the house. It takes 200 guests for a seated dinner or 300 for a drinks reception, making it the room most couples land on for their wedding breakfast.
THE LONDONDERRY
Originally Lord Londonderry’s smoking room, the Londonderry keeps its dark, moody character, which makes it well suited to a rehearsal dinner with close family and friends rather than the main event. It seats 60 for a ceremony or 40 for a reception, with room for a long table of 24 or round tables for 40.
THE TERRACE
The terrace looks out over the private lake and 400 acres of rolling countryside, and comes into its own for a civil ceremony or a champagne toast during the warmer months. Couples can watch the summer sun sparkle across the water and set behind the trees, which makes for one of the more photographed backdrops on the estate.
THE FOOD AND DRINK
Every wedding includes a three-course wedding breakfast and an evening menu, built around fresh, seasonal produce. Couples can also add evening street food with a playful edge, think char siu pork bao buns or a Korean fried chicken burger with harissa mayonnaise, alongside a children’s menu for younger guests. The wedding team works with each couple individually, so the result reflects the two of them.
BEDROOMS AND COTTAGES
Book Wynyard Hall and the wedding party has the main house to itself for the night, the ultimate house party. The 19 bedrooms range from classic country rooms to larger suites and family rooms, some with free-standing baths or walk-in showers, all finished individually with views over the grounds and ESPA treats included. Four hot-tub cottages in the grounds sleep from six to 12, ideal for bridesmaids, ushers, or families who want to stay together.
MAKE A WEEKEND OF IT
A single day rarely feels like enough, so many couples stretch the celebration across two or three. Within the 400 acre estate, that can mean a round of golf at the neighbouring course, clay pigeon shooting, a golden-hour BBQ, or a slow brunch the next morning with the people who mattered most the day before. Evenings run to midnight as standard, with the option to extend further or add a fireworks display to close the night.
WORTH SEEING IN PERSON
Wynyard Hall’s wedding open evening runs on Wednesday 21st October, from 5pm to 8pm, giving couples the chance to walk the staterooms dressed for a wedding, tour the bedrooms, and speak with the wedding coordinators about availability and quotes.

Wedding packages for 2027 start from £10,500 for a Sunday to Thursday date, rising to £19,200 for a Saturday, with 2028 pricing available on request.
