Roll up, roll up. Barnum is pulling into Newcastle this August, and it’s bringing acrobats, actor-musicians and one very ambitious showman with it.
Matt Rawle takes on the title role of P.T. Barnum in this dazzling production, swapping the West End for the Main Stage at Newcastle Theatre Royal from Tuesday 11th to Saturday 15th August.
Expect big tunes, bigger schemes and a tightrope walk that’ll have you holding your breath.
STEP RIGHT UP FOR A LIFE LESS ORDINARY
Barnum tells the story of P.T. Barnum, the 19th century showman who turned dreaming big into an entire career. Alongside his wife Charity, Barnum schemes, stumbles and reinvents himself again and again, chasing the next impossible idea. It’s a story about ambition with no ceiling, and a marriage that’s tested every time he chases another one.
Matt Rawle, known for his stage work in Cabaret, Evita and Les Misérables, steps into Barnum’s shoes for this run. He’s joined by a cast of more than 20 actor-musicians, acrobats and circus performers, all sharing the stage in a production that doesn’t just tell you about the greatest show on earth, it puts it right in front of you.
DIRECTING THE BIG TOP
The production is directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, with choreography from Oti Mabuse, who brings her sharp eye for spectacle to every scene. Between the two of them, this isn’t a musical that sits still. It moves, it tumbles and it somersaults its way through Barnum’s story with the same restless energy the man himself was known for.
That energy shows up everywhere, from the ensemble’s musicianship to the circus skills woven through the choreography. This is a cast built to do a bit of everything, and the production leans into that fully.
NO SAFETY NET REQUIRED
Here’s the detail that’ll have audiences on the edge of their seats: Barnum famously involves a tightrope walk, performed live, every single night. When the show first landed in the UK at the London Palladium, Michael Crawford made theatre history walking that tightrope across the stage, no safety net, no room for error.
Now it’s Matt Rawle’s turn to take the walk. It’s the kind of moment that turns a good night at the theatre into one you’re still telling people about a week later, and it’s a fitting nod to a show that’s always been about testing the limits of what’s possible.
MUSIC THAT’LL FOLLOW YOU HOME
The songs are the other reason Barnum has stuck around for decades. Cy Coleman’s score, paired with Michael Stewart’s lyrics and Mark Bramble’s book, gives the show a soundtrack that’s every bit as big as its subject. Join the Circus sets the tone early, Colours of My Life slows things down, and Come Follow the Band is the kind of number you’ll be humming on the Metro home.
Then there’s Love Makes Such Fools of Us All, which lands right at the emotional core of Barnum and Charity’s marriage. It’s proof this isn’t just spectacle for spectacle’s sake. Underneath the sequins and stunts, there’s a real love story trying to survive one big idea after another.

This is a big, bold night out, built for anyone who wants their theatre with a side of thrill. It’s a show for people who loved the film, people who love a good circus act, and people who just want to see a tightrope walk done properly, live, with nowhere to hide.
