THE LUNCH SECRET HALF OF ALNWICK STILL DOESN’T KNOW

Motte & Bailey is open to non-residents for lunch, afternoon tea and evening drinks, and lunch doesn’t need a booking. Most people walking past assume it’s guests-only, kept back for whoever’s staying upstairs. It isn’t, and that’s exactly the point.

The room backs that up. Deep bottle-green walls, rattan pendant lights, botanical prints in slim frames and cane-backed chairs give Motte & Bailey the feel of a proper standalone restaurant, not a hotel add-on. Further in, a chain-mail curtain hangs behind a statement multi-arm chandelier, with candlelit tables and green velvet banquettes doing the rest of the work. It’s built to be walked into straight off the street, not stumbled upon after checking in.

The hotel behind it has the credentials to match. Bailiffgate Hotel has been named among the Top 50 Boutique Hotels in the UK, and it’s a prestigious addition to the Condé Nast Johansens Luxury Hotels collection  – so this isn’t just a nice room attached to somewhere to sleep. It’s a proper destination in its own right.

YOUR NEW GO-TO FOR A £20 2-COURSE LUNCH IN ALNWICK

A set two-course lunch at Motte & Bailey costs £20, and it undercuts what you’d expect to pay for food this considered. Head Chef Paul Blakey leads the kitchen, turning out modern British dishes built from local, seasonal ingredients, and it’s one of the more exciting new dining destinations among Northumberland hotels.

It’s the kind of stop that turns a morning at the Castle or the Garden into a proper day out – and it’s arguably the most underused part of the whole operation, sitting right there on Bailiffgate for anyone who fancies it.

THE NEW DAY MENU THAT BEATS YOUR AVERAGE PUB LUNCH

A few dishes worth going out of your way for: the beer-battered cod with hand-cut chips, Bailiffgate mushy peas and tartare sauce, done properly rather than as an afterthought; the Bailiffgate burger, stacked with chilli jam, crisp pancetta and Monterey Jack in a sourdough bun; and the nduja and pea risotto, finished with parmesan and basil, for anyone after something a bit lighter (swap the nduja for wild mushrooms and it’s vegetarian).

For the brunch crowd who’d rather eat well than eat fast, the seared steak benedict with pesto hollandaise on toasted crumpets is the one to order, and the Shetland mussels in garlic cream, served with sourdough and fries, are worth a mention too. There’s a full day menu beyond these, including sides, Bailiffgate pancakes and puddings like sticky toffee pudding and orange and almond cake, so browse the full menu here.

THE SUNTRAP COURTYARD MADE FOR DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

The Courtyard sits behind the hotel’s Georgian sandstone façade, screened by simple wooden slat fencing, with young trees and low planting softening a clean gravel-and-paving layout. It’s an understated suntrap that looks built for long lunches rather than a car park with plants, and it’s already in use for alfresco brunches and afternoon teas. Not to mention the

The vibe throughout Bailiffgate Hotel is luxury without the pretentiousness – plush surroundings, friendly staff, and no sense of being rushed. If the weather’s on your side, the Courtyard Garden is the spot for alfresco afternoon tea, a cheeky cocktail, or a cuppa and cake with a floral backdrop, and you could genuinely lose an entire afternoon here without noticing.

WHY THIS COURTYARD SHOULD BE ALNWICK’S NEXT BIG SUMMER HANGOUT

Inside, Commissioner’s Bar already has the components for it: a warm, light-wood counter, a fireplace for the colder months, and a curated list of cocktails, wines, local beers and spirits. Move that energy out into the Courtyard Garden a summer evening, and it’s easy to picture a Northumberland gin served long with tonic and rosemary, a rhubarb spritz built around a local liqueur, or a classic Negroni for anyone who wants it straightforward.

Pair that with a pared-back menu already sitting in the kitchen’s repertoire – a Bailiffgate salad to snack on, a board of the three artisan cheeses, or an orange and almond cake with strawberries to finish – and there’s a relaxed, drop-in space that doesn’t compete with the main dinner service. It just gives people a reason to stay past their scone.

Alnwick fills up every summer with Castle and Garden visitors looking for somewhere good to eat and drink that isn’t a standard pub garden. A courtyard visibly busy on a warm evening does more to signal that this is open to everyone than any amount of signage ever could, and Motte & Bailey doesn’t need reinventing to capture that crowd – it just needs to say, clearly and often, that lunch and the courtyard are for everyone.

FANCY A NORTHUMBERLAND AFTERNOON TEA WHILE YOU’RE AT IT?

Afternoon tea at Bailiffgate Hotel costs £35 per person, served in Motte & Bailey with views towards Alnwick Castle. The sandwich course covers tuna with red onion and coriander, roast chicken and avocado with pesto mayo, a simple free-range egg and cress, and a hummus, olive, rocket and beetroot option for anyone skipping meat, alongside a Bailiffgate pork, thyme and sage sausage roll that’s better than it has any right to be in a sandwich course.

Vanilla and fruit scones follow with Bailiffgate’s own fruit jam and clotted cream, then a changing selection of sweet treats to close, and there’s a simpler £15 cream tea of warm scones, jam and clotted cream for anyone after less of a spread. Champagne is available by the glass too, spanning English options like Albury Vineyard and Gusbourne Brut Rosé through to Champagne Drappier, Pol Roger and Dom Pérignon.
