NORTH SHIELDS FISH QUAY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET HAS A STORY WORTH KNOWING
Low Quay Brew Co. didn’t come from nowhere. It started after a Sam Fender gig at St. James’ Park in 2023, a drunken conversation between owners Kamie Sword, Scott Taylor and their now-landlord, which led them to the former car garage on the busy Northumberland Street and the rest is history.
Kamie and Scott had spent years living in Australia and the Caribbean, soaking up the hospitality scene (and sunshine). They then came home to North Shields, fell in love with the place, and with long-term friend John Good, decided this was where they were going to build something of their own.
That something is Low Quay Brew Co. – a neighbourhood brewery and taproom on North Shields Fish Quay that’s earned one of the most loyal followings of any independent venue in the North East. If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out. If you have, you already know.

MORE THAN JUST A PUB IN NORTH SHIELDS
There are plenty of reasons to visit the pubs in North Shields, but Low Quay Brew Co.offers something a little different to the rest. The moment you walk through the brewery’s door, you notice it – relaxed, warm, never trying too hard (very low key, hence the name). The brewing kit sits right there in the taproom, the staff actually want to tell you about what’s on, and the crowd is genuinely mixed in the best possible way.
Regulars who’ve been coming since the beginning sit alongside people discovering North Shields Fish Quay for the first time. Craft beer enthusiasts, alongside people who just fancy a glass of wine and a comfortable seat. That’s exactly how Low Quay Brew Co.likes it. This isn’t a destination for one type of person – it’s a proper neighbourhood space, where the doors are always open, and there’s always something worth drinking.
And if craft beer isn’t your thing? No problem. Low Quay Brew Co. serves wines, spirits, cocktails and coffee too. No pressure, no snobbery. Just good drinks, good people, and one of the most genuinely welcoming atmospheres you’ll find at any pub in North Shields.
THE BEER IS BREWED RIGHT HERE – AND IT SHOWS
What sets Low Quay Brew Co. apart from every other pub on North Shields Fish Quay is simple: they brew their own beer on site. Every Low Quay Brew Co. pint you drink has been made in that very building, and the approach is always the same – balanced, drinkable, and never intimidating.
The flagship is Driftin’, a 4.8% hazy pale ale with soft citrus and stone fruit notes that’s become the house pour for a reason. Order it first. The Czech-style lager is crisp, clean and classic for anyone who wants something simple done properly. For something a little different – The Nitecrawler strawberry sour is light and easy with just a hint of berry on the finish – proof that sours don’t have to be an ordeal.
The range rotates, too, so there’s always something new to try alongside the core beers. It’s one of the things that keeps people coming back – you never quite know what’s going to be next. Even if you have the car – Low Quay Brew Co. have their range in cans to take away.
THIS SUMMER, NORTH SHIELDS FISH QUAY GETS ITS BEST OUTDOOR SPACE
Low Quay Brew Co. brand-new outdoor space is now open at North Shields Fish Quay – and nothing else on the quay comes close to it.
Picture yourself on a warm afternoon, settled into a seat under the canopy with a cold pint in hand, sun catching the water, food on the way. At the heart of it is a converted 40-foot shipping container housing a proper kitchen (opening next month) and an additional bar, with covered seating for 25 and room for a further 40 people outside. It’s a big space – relaxed but refined, social but unhurried. The kind of sun trap you find and immediately want to tell everyone about. Then immediately regretted telling everyone about it.

THE FOOD THAT MAKES THE TRIP EVEN MORE WORTH IT
The new kitchen will be serving a seasonal rotating menu built around sandos, small plates, and sides – bold flavours, quality ingredients, and nothing overcomplicating itself. The kind of food that pairs perfectly with a hazy beer on a sunny afternoon.
The kitchen will run Wednesday through Saturday, with a Sunday menu that Low Quay Brew Co. is keeping under wraps for now. Keep an eye on their socials for the reveal.
A BIG SUMMER AHEAD AT ONE OF THE BEST SPOTS ON NORTH SHIELDS FISH QUAY
In August, Low Quay Brew Co. turns two. They’re marking it in style on Northumberland Street over the final bank holiday of the summer – music, food, local businesses, and a whole lot of North Shields energy. Based on what they’ve built over the last two years, it’s shaping up to be the best street party on North Shields Fish Quay this year.
